Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's
A straight taper probably won't fit that stock, and the barrel alone will probably weigh over seven pounds. That's too much.
For a lighter (.243 or 6.5) rifle go with a light Palma. For a short barreled tactical rifle in .308 try the M24 contour. For a tactical match rifle with a 23-26" bbl I like the medium Palma because the rifle will be heavy enough for prone work and also balance well in all three positions.
For a dedicated prone heavy barrel rifle in a heavier caliber I really like the MTU contour, but then it's almost impossible to hold the rifle in a standing position for any period of time.
With regard to manufacturers, I have used a lot of Bartleins. But Rock, Llija, Kreiger, Schneider and Broughton are all excellent. My sentimental favorite is a Rob McLellan barrel, but you can't get them here. Among those mentioned above I let availability make my choice for me. In my experience the Schenier 5P's are fastest and the Broughton the slowest, but that's a generalization not to be taken as gospel. For gain-twist, Bartlein is the one. For a slow-twist benchrest gun, maybe Kreiger still. In sum, there are a lot of good barrel makers. Among the cheaper brands I have also had Douglas XX tubes that shoot very well.
