Just started a build on a rem 700 sps varmint. So far i have set it in a B&C medalist adjustable stock and added Wyatt's dbm. the next thing i plan to get is a better barrel. what is everyone preferred profile and mfg? I like the look of a full straight blank. is there any benefits to going to a extra heavy barrel?

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

Your rifle would be a PIG with a full straight blank, carrying it from the car to the bench wouldn't even be fun.

I like the Varmint Profile, Medium Palma and maybe Heavy Palma at the most.

Mfg's liked around here in no order, Rock, Bartlien, Brux, Broughton, Krieger.

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

A straight taper probably won't fit that stock, and the barrel alone will probably weigh over seven pounds. That's too much.

For a lighter (.243 or 6.5) rifle go with a light Palma. For a short barreled tactical rifle in .308 try the M24 contour. For a tactical match rifle with a 23-26" bbl I like the medium Palma because the rifle will be heavy enough for prone work and also balance well in all three positions.

For a dedicated prone heavy barrel rifle in a heavier caliber I really like the MTU contour, but then it's almost impossible to hold the rifle in a standing position for any period of time.

With regard to manufacturers, I have used a lot of Bartleins. But Rock, Llija, Kreiger, Schneider and Broughton are all excellent. My sentimental favorite is a Rob McLellan barrel, but you can't get them here. Among those mentioned above I let availability make my choice for me. In my experience the Schenier 5P's are fastest and the Broughton the slowest, but that's a generalization not to be taken as gospel. For gain-twist, Bartlein is the one. For a slow-twist benchrest gun, maybe Kreiger still. In sum, there are a lot of good barrel makers. Among the cheaper brands I have also had Douglas XX tubes that shoot very well.

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

I have a #7 contour 26" tube on one of mine (6.5 cal). It is heavy, really heavy. You have to shoot it supported (prone is best). You can not shoot it freehand, and sitting is tough.

That is the absolute heaviest contour I would recommend. It is just massive, a no contour would be brutal.

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

Heavy barrels do 3 things that I think are helpful. 1 they have better harmonics, which is believed to promote better accuracy. 2 because there is so much material they hold up under heat, lots of rounds fired quickly. 3 a heavier rifle tends to have better launch dynamics and less recoil.

My friend has the BC fully adjustable. Its chambered in 300win mag. His barrel is a 24" Benchmark contoured to a Rem Sendero and fluted. It is probably the best blanced rifle I have ever picked up. It weighs 15lbs. In his first tactical match he tied for 4th.

I think medium palma and sendero are the two best tactical barrel weights. There is going to have to be a compromise between, sustained fire, good harmonics, and balance. These two fit the bill nicely. If its a supported prone or bench only rifle, the heavier the better!

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

I've always had excellent results with Shilen barrels. As for taper, I wouldn't go with anything larger than a #7 LV. Barrels heavier than this can make the rifle a pain to transport as well as screw the rifle's balance up.

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

shilen are just fine. my gunsmith has been shooting them for years and he talked me into getting one for my 6.5-284. but +1 on stopping at #7 contour. and i would def. get it fluted.

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

Good speed from shillen.

Check out Benchmark. I might get flamed for this but I personnally think they are one of (if not) the best barrel out there right now. VERY straight barrels!

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

if your gonna lug it around, dont go heavy on the contour.
my .308 has a shilen 7HV barrel in a McmA3 stock, its not bad was pretty balanced until i had to cut the muzzle back 2".
my .300wm has a 26" Broughton tube 1.30 at the breech and 1" at the muzzle, i went this way to avoid using a break. that rifle is a PIG, and i really dont want to carry it far if i have too. i cant shoot it from the standing (unsupported), but prone supported and sitting is okay, a solid kneeling position is only good for a short period of time. the 300 is a balanced platform its just heavy.

i took a .223 PSS barrelled action had a Shilen 18" (#7 std contour) and put it the same B&C stock you have and thats what my 12 yr old son is learning on. its a good handling system.

I've owned and shot over a dozen ABS Carbon Fiber Wrapped Barrels. They weigh less than half what the same contour steel barrel weighs. ABS barrels are extremely accurate. The heaviest ABS barrel I've owned was a 28 inch straight cylinder 1.25" diameter barrel that weighed 3.5 pounds. It shot lights out and made for easy hiking.

Re: Barrel profile's and mfg's

I like the idea of having a short fat barrel if it's a 308. Good balance and it great characteristics of heavy barrels. If you are not planning on carrying it around a bunch I think the bigger the better. Rock bartlein kreiger benchmark shilen it doesn't matter. They are all good barrels
