Gunsmithing Barrel selection

Hey everyone,

I'm getting a new barrel for my Rem 700 .300WM and will be running hornady 208gr amax projectiles.
Currently I'm running a 26" barrel with 1 in 10 twist. Now the questions being are:
- should I go more length in the barrel
- what twist should I run
- is there any need for fluting (never seen a sniper rifle with them)

Any help with these would be great.

-11 twist is enough for the 208/210s, if you are going to try the 230s, you should stick with a 10tw
-extra length is beneficial at extended distances, especially past 800yards or so. Going up to 28" could be worth it if you will shoot often at 1000y or more
-fluting is a personal preference, your barrel will heat up faster and cool down faster. Fluting heavy barrels should be considered a cosmetic option, fluting rem varmints and mid weight contours is sensible if you're trying to save a littl weight

Ok no dramas, might stick with 1:10 cause I have all the data on that.
I would like to shoot a 1000yds but dunno if I'll ever get there, but better to be prepared then undergunned.

Whatever the twist, get a Bartlein or Krieger.

Does he ship to Australia?

You might have a real hard time finding barrel companies that ship to Australia due to stupid government policies but here's hoping you find one

You have a few very good options close to you. Maddco makes good quality barrels in Australia, and Trueflite in New zealand makes a quality product too, you should be able to order them directly with no fuss. from NZ.
Of those i would probably choose Trueflite myself, but both are good and will do just as good as another make.

Length depending on what you want 26-28.
The 10 twist is the way to go if your not looking to shoot lighter bullets.
Fluting is more cosmetic then anything else, have never seen the need, rather choose a fitting barrel contour from the go.


You should have some barrels imported to AUS too
Would suprise me if no gunsmiths there have Krieger, Border, LW, Shilen etc.
They are all good barrels.
Bartlein i do not know if you should expect to find.


To export only one from the US will be more hassle then it is worth, also the export fees are not cheap.
