I have shot 5000 to 10000 rnds thru custom 308. I can still shoot 1/2 groups sometimes but seem to be getting more and more flyers in all directions.I have shot barrels out of pistols and once they go,they shoot really bad. Blaster

Blaster,
Maybe those "Fliers" are from your lack of trigger time.

Re: Barrel shot out?

Well is it 5,000 or 10,000 rounds down the tube? Will make a bit of difference in the throat. You keep a round count book?

Re: Barrel shot out?

First sign a barrel is about to let go is fliers, just one one at first out of the group and then more.
Put up a target at 1000 inches consisting of index card. Shoot about five rounds through the card. If the holes are not round but eggshaped it is starting.
You have more than paid for your barrel.

Oh yeah another thing you will see. If you defoul it and clean it real good it will shoot well for maybe 20 rounds then the fliers will come back. The test procedure called for ten rounds off target before shooting for groups on target and then it was three 10 shot groups per shooter at 100 yards.

Re: Barrel shot out?

So I sat down and figured out it has just over 7000 rds thru it. The other thing is that it shoots better once the barrel gets warm, shooting 5 shot groups the 3ed or 4th group is best. blaster

Re: Barrel shot out?

I'd run a couple Tubbs throat maintenance bullets down the bore (after cleaning the heck out of the barrel and throat area) and Have a fresh crown put on. Total cost will be less than 100 bucks. Sure beats paying 500-600 bucks for a re-barrel when the barrel still has plenty of life.

A friend of mine does this and he currently has about 12,000 round's through his .308 Pac-nor barrel and it still shoots sub 1/2MOA.............. He calls it the barrel that never quits.

7000 rounds is a lot of rounds. I have 6700+ rounds through my GAP with a RockCreek 5-R and to tell you the truth the thing still shoots as good or better than the day I first put rounds through it. I had a new crown put on it at about 5000 rounds just for piece of mind, and when I got it back it shot better than before re-crowning.
