I am thinking of putting a 6.5x55 together, preferably with Tikka T3 action by re-barreling. It's almost impossible to get a heavy barreled 6.5x55 here in the US, therefore going this route

Is 30-06 or 270WIN a good base action? Bolt face should be compatible. Is there a smith someone would particularly recommend for this odd caliber (in the US)?

Thanks for advices

It'd be very easy to put together a heavy barreled Swede using a Stevens 200 or Savage 110 long action and a prefit barrel from Criterion, Shilen, Mcgowen, Pac-Nor, Douglas, Lothar Walther, etc.

I went with a Rem 700 LA. Using
tweaked 300 WM mags in the chassis.

Re: Base for 6.5x55 build

If I were using a Tikka action for a 6.5SE build, I would just buy a Tikka chambered in 6.5SE.
They have several models.

A savage or stevens long action will work just fine.

However, when you compare the tikka action to a savage/stevens, I think you would choose the Tikka.

Re: Base for 6.5x55 build

I already have a Tikka T3 6.5x55SE. Love its smooth bolt and superb accuracy. What I want to get is a heavy barrel version. Hate to rebarrel the T3 Lite!

The new Tikka sporter in 6.5x55SE doesn't seem to have the varmint barrel. EuroOptics just put the same 308 Sporter picture for every version in gunbroker so the 6.5x55SE looks like having a varmint barrel in their ad. Another seller has the real close-up pictures for a 6.5x55 sporter, and the barrel diameter seems between my T3 lite and the varmint. Although I am sure Spoter is a terrific rifle, at its price tag, one can almost build a basic custom rifle

Tikka LA in other calibers are frequently sold on gunbroker in reasonable prices. Shilen does not sell pre-made barrel for Tikka - they probably won't have many customers. If a gunsmith is an expert in re-barrel Tikka, them maybe it's worthwhile to look into barrel options

Look terrific!

Re: Base for 6.5x55 build

Mac Tilton of MT guns is one of the go-to guys around here for Tikka work. See what he thinks about putting a heavy barrel on your Tikka.

Personally, the cost of a donor rifle ($400) plus a match-grade varmint barrel ($300) plus gunsmithing ($250-$500) leaves you with a heavy barreled Tikka in a crappy stock. My guess is that the barrel channel in the stock will need to be opened up at the very least. Not sure what that costs, or if it is even possible.

This is one of the reasons the Tikka Sporter shines to me. The laminated stock with complete ergo adjustment is a must-have on a varmint and/or competition rifle.

I disagree. This is a Sporter in 6.5x55:

I think you are right - thanks for this website

One thing puzzles me though is that this woman is shooting a sporter with threaded muzzle, while the spoter in 6.5x55 in the US has non threaded muzzle.

Re: Base for 6.5x55 build

A threaded muzzle is standard on the 20" model, and optional on the 24" model.

Who knows if Beretta imports all variants however. Euro Optics is showing a threaded muzzle only on the 20" model if that means anything.

Thanks for the clarification
