"They Marched into Sunlight" by David Maraniss is a book about the events that occurred on Oct 17, 1967. It is mainly the story of the battle between a VC regiment and A and D companies of 2/28 Black Lions battalion of the Big Red One. There are two other narratives in the book including the protest/riot of the students at the Madison U of Wisconsin and the debates of Johnson administration on how to proceed with the war in Vietnam. A and D companies were led by Terry Allen, son of the famous Gen Allen who led the Big Red One in WWII. Both companies were caught in a ambush by a VC regiment who were on their way to deploy for the Tet Offensive. A and B companies were almost wiped out with half killed and most of the remainder wounded. The command staff, including Allen were killed. The higher command lied about the results and tried to spin it as a victory!
