Beanland 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Build Is DONE!

Re: .308 or 6.5x47 For My Short/Light Build?

I have a 6.5X55 carbine with a 16.5 barrel, my first rifle and just dusted it off and bedded the stock, new trigger and put a scope on it. for a 80 year old weapon it shoots 3/4 at 100 yards, havent had it out further yet

Re: .308 or 6.5x47 For My Short/Light Build?

Enjoyed reading about your build. I have been thinking lately of a similar setup. I was leaning toward a 7 RSAUM in a short barrel, but the 47L is interesting as well.
Make sure you post pics when it is done. Also, what the weight came in at, and bullet performance. Thanks

Re: .308 or 6.5x47 For My Short/Light Build?

Jedi- Are you seeing good accuracy with that load? I am looking to try and speed mine up and it sounds like you are where I want to be.

Just took a giant step forward. Got the final piece of the puzzle! The stock came in today after a 4-month wait. Did I mention that I hate waiting? Anyway, boxed up all the parts and they are off to Jon Beanland. Should have it done in a few more weeks! Woohoo!

BTW, that stock is LIGHT! ~24 ounces. I wasn't sure there was anything in the box when the UPS man handed it to me! Gotta love that "Edge" constrction. Thanks McMillan and JW Precision!

Final Specs again:

-McMillan A1-3 Stock in "Edge" Construction 2 flushcups and a bipod stud painted Flat Dark Earth
-Surgeon DBM Bottom Metal
-Surgeon 591 Action
-Small-firing-pin-hole Surgeon Bolt w/FP turned down to match
-Shilen Trigger at 2.5 pounds
-18.5 inch Lilja 3 groove 8 twist
-Sendero/Varmint Contour Fluted and threaded for my Omega
-Viper PST 4x16x50 FFP MOA
-Coated in Coyote Tan CeraKote

Parts Is Parts!

Re: 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Lapua Build

I sent my parts off to Mr. Gordon @ SAC a week or two ago. My McMillan will be following in a month or two when it's finished.

I went with a 24in Benchmark 3 groove in an 8 twist, Light palma fluted. The action is a CDNN FN action.

The guys at benchmark said I'd only be looking at around 2700fps with a 123 amax with a barrel @ 24 inches, but it appears from the above post's that this is just not the case.

I had Dave Kiff make me a reamer off of a loaded dummy round. I'm running about .180 FB cuz I loaded the round long to use the full case capacity.

Mark says it will be about 9-10 months to get everything done.... damn the waiting! At least I know it will leave his shop in perfection.

Re: 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Lapua Build

Well, the day has finally come. It is DONE! Jon Beanland did his usual outstanding work in a very compact time frame and UPSanta brought it to my door this morning. It weighs just under 12 pounds fully equipped as you see it in the pic.

Re: Beanland 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Build Is DONE!

Got in a little range time this morning and this stick is going to be a hammer! Jon Beanland builds one heck of a rifle. First pic is the first 5 round group after zeroing at a hundred. It comes in at ~.188 inches. Factory Lapua 123 Scenars. After geting on paper, I moved on to the purpose of todays range time. I ran a ladder test at 300 yards using Varget (.4 grain increments), CCI450's, and 123 Scenars seated .015 off the lands. Second pic below shows the ladder results. Check out #'s 6, 7 & 8. Vertical spread for those three shots was just 5/16ths of an inch! BTW, QuickLoad's velocity predictions were pretty accurate and load #7 (smack in the middle of shots 6/7/8) was QL's prediction for an OBT load for my barrel length. Gonna do it again at 500 yards in .2 grain increments on Monday just to verify. Test charges/actual chrono velocities were as follows:
#1 35.9gr 2597 fps
#2 36.3gr 2618 fps
#3 36.7gr 2666 fps
#4 37.1gr 2687 fps
#5 37.5gr 2719 fps
#6 37.9gr 2756 fps
#7 38.3gr 2779 fps
#8 38.7gr 2781 fps
#9 39.1gr 2848 fps
#10 39.5gr 2902 fps

I decided to start with Varget instead of H4350 or Reloader 17 since the barrel is so short. It seems to be working. Gotta do a little more refining. BTW, 38.3 grains is at MAX (or just a hair over) according to QL. I had no sticky bolt lifts at all during testing. The last two loads 9 & 10 (well above MAX) did show the tiniest hint of primer cratering (less than what I've seen on some factory .308 match ammo in some of my other custom rifles) and the #10 load shows an ever-so-slight ejector mark. 38.7 gr (load #8) is what I will call absolute MAX for this rifle.

What load did you settle on for that 22-incher?

I have it's twin in 7-08, I built it for much the same purpose. I am curious about your opinion on the scope, how is the glass quality? I am impressed with the weight of it.

Nice stick Fb. Love the spiral fluting. The Viper PST is a great optic for the money. Emphasis on "for the money." Not as clear and bright as the NF or Leupold scopes I have had (in fairness, they were not FFP scopes), but chock-full of features at a what-Leupold-MK4's-used-to-cost-back-in-the-day price. The knobs have good feel, the adjustments track well, and I even like the poor man's zero stop. All that said, I have upgraded the optic on this rifle to the SS 5-20 HD and it is certainly on another level than the PST.

I settled on a mild 123 gr SMK load that shoots in the .2's and .3's out to 500 yards (as far as I've had a chance to test it). CCI 450 primer, 37.8 gr of Varget, 2.725 COL (.025 off the lands). It is running 2770 out of the 18.5 inch barrel. Acccording to JBM/Litz for my location, it'll get me to 1K with 9.6 mils and still be supersonic to 1100 yards. It tracks dead on the JBM numbers out to 500. Not too shabby for a mild load from a short barrel. Love those 6.5 mm bullets.

On a side note, this rifle has taken 3 whitetails (2 for me and one for my 11 year old nephew - his first deer on his first ever hunt) this fall with 120 gr TTSX's over 36.6 gr of Varget. They are running 2730 fps and the deer just can't stand 'em at all

Thanks, I hadn't considered the scope until I looked at the specs. At 22oz. it seemed like it offered everything that I was looking for.

I do miss the lighter weight. The SS is HEAVY.

Re: Beanland 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Build Is DONE!

Scoop-
You have a nice rig and this is a great thread.

Q from me (I do own a 6.5x47L but its a big heavy beast)-

Did you ever think of necking this down to 6mm? 6-6.5x47L throwing the 105grains might be a fierce setup. You might be able to push the 105grainer at 100-150fps faster for the same barrel length. The 105grainer 6mm has a similar, if not a tad better, BC than the 123grain 6.5 mm. Just a thought. I really like your setup.

Thanks JB. Never though about it - UNTIL NOW! LOL. Dang it Dale! Might have to do a little research though.

Re: Beanland 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Build Is DONE!

I have been watching this thread. I like the light rifle idea.I am doing a 20" 6x47 Lapua on a Tikka 558 action with a light palma taper Kreiger 1:8 twist. The stock is a McMillan silhouette stock I bought off their specials page a couple years ago. It should be a great combination.

Re: Beanland 18.5 Inch 6.5x47 Build Is DONE!

Hey scoop have you tried any of the heavier bullets yet, I'm curious of the velocity with the 130's and the 140's in a 18" barrel?

Jimmy,

Welcome to the forum.

I would check out the 123 A-max. Very good B.C. This bullet with Varget should be a great all weather combo. IMHO.
