I bought a used Remington 700 that has a HS Precision stock. It already has Aluminium bedding blocks but I was thinking of bedding the recoil lug. There seem to be two schools of thought, full action or just the lug. The Gunworks video I watched said no need to do action if you have the bedding blocks. Thoughts?

How does it shoot?

I have had quite a few guns that shot great bolted straight into the bedding blocks with no bedding. If you bed the stock it lowers resale value of the stock. I always recommend that with bedding blocks or chassis that people shoot them without bedding and if they shoot good then don't touch it.

Look at the number of top competitors in PRS and even F class that are using alluminum chassis. They are the same mating design generally as the bedding block and they are a proven method.

Every once in awhile bedding will help a gun shoot better, but I think that is the exception and not the rule.

All that being said, if you are already set on bedding then I personally would do the whole action. If I am going to the trouble of taping stuff off, applying release agent, mixing epoxy, etc., then I would rather just do the whole thing. It isn't that much extra work and it would put my mind at rest about if my half-assery was affecting my precision or not. I tend to think it is unlikely to make much of a difference one way or the other.

I havent shot it yet actually but there is definitely some slop between the lug and the front of the block. I was just thinking to fix that while I'm waiting on my new trigger to arrive.

That is a good point on the chassis. I do have a PRS rifle w a Defiance action in a MDT chassis I could look at.

How is there slop? You should firmly seat the lug against the block while tightening the action screws.

i almost always bed the recoil lug, especially on magnum calibers, honestly with modern composite stocks, i dont know that its necessary....but it makes me feel better knowing i have full contact on the recoil lug and recoil isnt being taken by the action screws.

bedding under action screws....eh, i dont make it a priority.

if a gun has an aluminum bedding block, i treat that just like a chassis and leave it as is.
