I am new to gunsmithing but not handicapped, I am going to attempt to bed a stock for my Remington 5r, it is a cheap Choate tactical not the good HS that came with the rifle so I am not going to cry unless I bed the rifle to the stock. My first question for those of you who have bedded a stock before is can I use 1/4 28 screws with the heads cut and ground off to align the stock or should i break down and just buy action alignment screws. The second question I have is the stock factory screws seem like they will be too short after bedding to properly engage the threads on the action, does anyone make a longer screw for the Remington action or am I going to have to go hunting at the local hardwares for something that will work

Re: bedding questions

The factory screws should be fine, you won't be raising the action up from the stock by bedding it. You're just making it so the action cannot shift on it's own.

Re: bedding questions

i would suggest that you read WNRoscoe's post on DIY bedding, get the 1/4x28 screws about 4-6 inches long, cut the heads off, wrap them in tape to center them in the pillars then bed it while letting it truly float without putting any stress in the bed job
