I recently got a great deal on a used stock here and decided to take the time to share my fix. It had been previously bedded and the barrel channel was not right for the Hart over-the-course taper I have on my 6.5-284. Some don't mind an ugly gap or free float relief around the barrel. I am OCD as hell so that just had to be changed. The previous owner that my bro bought this stock from was 100% upfront about bedding and deserves kudos for honesty. If you see this, you know who you are. thanks.
Anyways, when you bed a stock that has been done before I suggest drilling/milling out the pillars. You just can't get the same job done if you leave them there.
Plus, you don't know if they had been properly installed to start with.
I don't want to set my pillars, bed the action, and bed/fix the barrel channel in three steps. I do them in one. Yes, its gonna be messy as hell. Have rags, Q-tips, and more than one pair of rubber gloves ready.
I use Pasco 10 mil tape to tape the front, back and sides of recoil lug. I then put down 4 layers on the barrel ( IF.... I am fixing barrel channel). This barrel has flutes so I packed the flutes with clay and taped over them. 4 layers gives a nice even free float around the barrel. I attach the pillars to the receiver after coating action with release agent. I use brass plumbing ferrules and tape to center the action screw in the pillar. Put down the Devcon in the stock that had already been prepped and clean excess that comes out. If you put enough in there so you will not have voids, you are going to have a lot squeeze out. I let Devcon cure at least 18 hours. Hope this helps.
