Beginner rifle

Re: Beginner rifle

Pawn shop Remington 700. I just saw a couple of BDLs in a pawn shop with a scope for $349 and both were in great shape. You can bed it yourself and put a $100 Timney on it and that's about as good as your gonna get for that price range. IMHO.

BTW, this is 10 shot's out of a pawn shop 700 in 30-06 with hand loads. I was sighting a scope in at 100y. They can be made to shoot very well.

Re: Beginner rifle

Also, is .308 a must? Reason asking is I have a couple as well and a .270 or 30-06 in our neck of the woods will do anything and everything a .308 will do.

edt: or a 7mm-08 or .243

Re: Beginner rifle

$350 is a tight budget, but an older used r700 would be my first choice. a used savage come in second, but it's only due to personal preference.

Re: Beginner rifle

I want 308 because of ammo compatibility with my other guns and availability. 30-06 is another but more of a last resort. I am competing in the ofasts sniper shoot next year and need it by then. I have experience out to about 300 yards.
