Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

I have had both on savages, currently have 2 choates mainly because I got a deal on 1 of them and my other was built on a long action so had to go with it instead of a b&c.

The choate is heavy, almost 4 lbs. If you planning on lugging it around for any amount of time, probably would get the b&c. Okay for a bench gun or if you dont pack it though. The recoil pad on the choate is crap, the B&C pad is much better. The choate has the forend rail, which could be a plus or minus. The barrel channel on it can fit huge diameter barrels. I have a 1" no taper on both of mine and plenty of room, free floats easy. Made of rynite, heavy but from what I read its pretty much indestructible. Hard to prep for painting. Large palm swell, which I like because I have large hands and long fingers. Check the barrel channel and make sure the barrel is straight in it. I have one that is a little off center, which is fine because I bedding it and can correct it, and have read about others with the same problem. Swivel location can be good and bad, depending on your preference. Did I mention its heavy?

The B&C has better fit and finish in my opinion. I wish the forend on them were more like the mcmillan a3 and some have sanded them down and filled the areas to make it more like them. depending on your contour, you may have to relieve the barrel channel area (savage varmint contour will fit fine though). A few more color choices with the B&C, if you dont plan on painting. Uses standard trigger guard, where the choate comes with a plastic one for their stock. Cheek weld feels a bit higher to me, but may not be I have never measured them and no longer have my medalist to compare right now.

Both are good mid-level stocks. Have you considered the HS Precision? For a little more money you can pick an HS up, and I think they are better stocks than the choate and b&c. If possible, handle both stocks. I have gotten used to the choate and I like it better (now) than I do the B&C, but I shoot mainly bench or prone and dont carry it. I like the butthook for hand/bag placement on it. I also like the spacers that you can add on the choate. But I dont think you can go wrong with either, and really the only choice in this price range unless you want to wait for a stockade stock.

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

Having spent some time with a couple of different B&Cs and the Choate, as the poster above states, they are pretty much comparable in quality and price. They do have different pluses and minuses. I personally didn't prefer the palm swell on the choate, but that's just me.

The big difference would be how each one feels to you, and your intended use - best recommendation is to get your own hands on them, then decide.

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

I have my full bull barrel in a B&C medalist with no problem. Only trimming I ever did on my stock was at the rear tang so as long as you install the stock per manufacture's recommendations you'll be just fine.

Good Luck,
Merritt

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

Funny...well, not "funny"- but really coincidental.
We bought one of each last month. The B&C Medalist for our Rem 700 (.223) and the Choate tactical for the Savage 11 (.308).

I can't find weights listed online, but the Choate sure seems to be a much heavier stock. Palm swell is pretty large, but after shooting it a bit, I have no issue with it.

OOPS- just backed up and read 2guard's reply, so I'll stop typing and just say he nailed it IMO...." ^^^X2^^^"

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

I have had 3 B&C stocks and all 3 were garbage. 1 for a 700 and 2 for a Savage 10FP. Not one of them let the barrel sit in the channel centered. The tangs needed material removed. I got Choate to replace the B&C stocks and problem solved. I'll never buy B&C again.

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

The bottom rail on my choate ultimate varmint did not allow for secure mounting of a harris bipod. The bipod would bottom out on the rail before touching the stock. I switched to a rifle with a B&C Medalist. The weight difference is very noticeable as well as the recoil pad as others noted.

Ugh,I hope the B & C M40 stock I just bought is gtg.

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

There were a few other things about the B&C that I did not like. My opinion is based on the fact that I received 3 duds. Others have had much better luck with them. Don't base your decision on my comments alone.

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

I had a B&C on a 700 in 7mm STW, worked gret, until I broke it dropping it from a saddle scabbard. I'd definitely buy one again, but that rifle is fixing to where a Manners.

Re: Bell & Carlson medalist vs Choate tactical

Really like both of my BC light tacticals for the money. Unless something has changed on the choate the built in trigger guard will make it major work if you ever want to go to a detachable magazine system.

Jeff at CDI precision will inlet a Choate A5 and with his bottom metal and a five round mag shipped for $509.00.Mine fit perfectly but I had to shorten the front bolt just a little to clear the bolt. A ten rd mag I think is $10.00 more total $519.00.
Give him a call if interested in a center feed 4.40 spacing, his workmanship is top notch!
