Anyone shooting these long things? I've got a box to try with H4831SC. What kind of performance are you getting? Speed, etc?

It'll be in a short action remington action seated to 2.98" (alpha mag).

I havent tried the hybrids yet but I am shooting 180 VLD's w/ 4831sc. They seem to like it around 2900 fps but i've got them up to 3000. I've actually got to 3090 with Retumbo, but they dont shoot as well there as they do at 2900.

What's the BC of the hybrids?

Re: Berger 180g Hybrid in 7mm SAUM? Short Action

BC listed at 0.674.

I have shot them a lot in my 284 Shehane. They are actually shorter than the 180g VLDs. Mine shoot best at about 20 thous off the lands. They are shooting very well for me at 2950 fps with H4831SC. I have only shot them to 600 yards so far, but I do like them a lot.

Sorry, no experience with the SAUM.

Shot them in a 7/300 WSM using H1000 and also a 7mm/06 with RL22 and H4831sc.

They shoot very well and I am always tickled with how well they do in the wind. The chosen powders mentioned in this thread are all really good, RL22 would be the last one I took on in the future though due to the temperature sensitivity that it shows. H4831sc and H1000 are very temp stable in my experience. The Retumbo was very stable as well and in some other calibers that have similar overbore ratio's it has given me the best speeds at the muzzle.

Thanks for the info guys. Will this load work in the alpha mag loaded at 2.98? What charges are you using, coal, etc?

Re: Berger 180g Hybrid in 7mm SAUM? Short Action

Just depends on what the free bore in your chamber is. I can touch lands with 180 vld's and fit in my accurate wsm mag that only lets me load out to 2.950. My chamber has 55 thousandths free bore. A 7saum is a shorter case than a 7wsm, and the 180 hybrid is shorter than a 180 vld. So depending on how you and your smith decide to set up your chamber, it shouldn't be a problem.

Well this is actually in a factory Sendero rifle. I just dummy loaded one to mag length and chambered it. Seems to function fine. How exactly would you measure this chamber? Load one way long and chamber it with force? I've reloaded quite a bit, but nothing too precise. Just hunting/plinking rounds. Trying to figure this stuff out to be honest.

There are tools... Hornady makes an OAL guage set that you can use along with a Hornady modified 7mmSAUM case. You then need to also get the Hornady comparitor body along with a 7mm insert. This will allow you to measure the hornady OAL tool using your calipers, giving you a measurement from the ogive.

The Berger 180 grain 7mm projectiles are a thing of beauty
