I've read about these but haven't tried any yet. I see they're in stock at Powder valley. These are the newest gen2 right?? I will be using Retumbo. My current load is 93.1 loaded to 3.620 but these will have to be shot single fed. What COAL are some of you using for these?

Anyone using these with Retumbo?

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

my mag let's me load out to 3.75 or so. My rifle isn't together yet but after looking over the smk's and the scenar's compared to the berger's, i would have to give all the advantage to the hybrids. they are much more consistent after all the measurements and such.

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

The bergers shouldnt be loaded to 3.620 though should they?? I get excellent results from that load mentioned above with Retumbo but wanna try some of the hybrids now and just seeing where to start.

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

I got my berger 300 hybrids in today and tried three different loads. One was my current 93.1 retumbo and I seated them to 3.733. 4 of the 5 were .9" at 300 yards and one left that I think I pulled opened it up to 1.6"

I also tried 93.1 but seated them 3.685 and it didn't like those.

Last group was 93.5 at 3.733 and it was slightly larger group than the 93.1.

I plan to try the 93.1 with longer seating depths and shoot it to 1000.

vertical for the 93.1 was only .8" for 5 rounds

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

so is there a definitive up to date conclusion on Lapua vs Berger vs SMK for a 300 grain 338LM projectile? I suppose it's hard to get a true apples to apples since the seating depth might have to be different for each bullet depending on where the ogive is...and if that's true, it may be hard to provide a true apples to apples comparison.

However what is the actual grouping that can be consistently achieved with each of these bullets, putting aside BCs etc... what is the real world ranking of these three choices?

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

I got to try these with h1000 and seating them out closer to the lands. 92.0 h1000 seems to be working well. 500 yard 5 round group around 1.75" center to center.

Can't wait to stretch these on out!!

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

Tried the above load at 1000 again and ended up with a 4.55" ctc 6 round group at 1000 yards. This rifle shoots a lot better with the h1000 powder and I'm really liking those bergers. I may try to work up a mag length load with either smk or scenar sometime also.

Can't wait to try these out! Alan, what kind of velocities are you achieving with the H1000? Are you seeing less vertical with it compared to Retumbo?

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

I haven't ran it across the chrony yet but I believe its right around 2800 fps. I had a load worked up with retumbo and SMK's but it always had more vertical than with the H1000. I've had groups at 1000 with the h1000 with less than 2" vertical. After trying some other loads, I settled on the 92 grain and confirmed it today. 4 of the 6 were 2" group with the other 2 for a total of 4.55"

Re: Berger 338 300 grain match tactical hybrid

From reading about the bullet, I thought these were designed by Brian Litz to be seated to mag length and less sensitive to jump. That would seem to go along with the .01 findings above. I haven't tried the Bergers since the previous hybrid issues, but am interested in how these shake out.
