I have had great luck with both, not so good w/RP for gilt edged accuracy.

Or do you guys think Nosler or Lapua is worth the dough?

Thanks.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

I am about to use Lapua exclusivley for my precision shooting. I will let you know. It is my understanding that you get more reloads out of the Lapua VS. winchester

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

I’ve shot more than my fair share of RP, Win, FC and Lapua brass. Absolutely, Lapua is worth the extra $$$. When the new 260 Lapua brass comes out, the 260 will become even more popular than it is right now and that’s saying a lot.

Lapua Brass is the reason the 6BR and 6 Dasher are what they are today. The 6.5x47L and 6-6.5x47L are no exceptions to that statement. .

No hype. It's all true

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

I have 300 pieces of Lapua 308 brass that I have performed minimal prep on. One batch of 100 has 6 firings on it, the primer pockets are like new. I should be able to load a few more before annealing. My Win brass was already toast with the same hot load and 1 less firing.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

Bought 500 Win .243 cases a few years ago when I got my .243 and still using them although I have lost about 180 at matches. They have 5 firings on them and still working well and make very accurate ammo. I wouldn't pay extra for Lapua but it's your money.

Midway prices:
500 Lapua .243 brass - $472

500 Win .243 brass- $199
1000 Win brass- $374

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

Thanks all, no doubt Lapua is normally what all else hopes to be, but I am looking for give/take 1/2 MOA for what I am doing, and figure WW and/or Federal should do that...

No doubt Primer pockets last perhaps longest in Lapua.

Just wondering I hear guys annealing Lapua after a few firings, I never did that w/6BR brass and it lasted and lasted.

Is there a reason other than brass life? Does annealing affect accuracy? Neck tension consistency? Etc?

Thanks much.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

I quit counting how many loads there were on my 6.5 Grendel Lapua cases after I got past 6 loadings. Everything was annealed, and now, out of about 100 rounds, a case neck will split, or one primer pocket will finally get too loose for me to be comfortable with. I think that is spectacular performance for the Lapua cases.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

In my opinion,Winchester is probably the best domestic brass on the market, right now.Lapua is better,in that its more consistant and last longer.Whether its worth the cost is a personal issue.I think it is and I use it,unless I'm shooting someplace where I may loose it. Pete

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

I'm with Rob on this one. I shoot Win brass in my .243. Lapua is very nice brass, but I'm able to load deadly accurate handloads in my Win brass, so I don't see an advantage. Plus, Win brass is cheap and seems last forever.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

Silver State Armory is now producing 243 brass and if it is anything like their 6.8, 5.56, or 308 brass it is awesome, and very well priced. I can't say it competes with Laupa but it is much better than WW, REM, or Fed.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

Good hearing about the SSA. I do hope they continue following thru w/plans on their 260 ammo/brass so there are more choices and competition to keep prices in check.

I might have to try some SSA given that strong endorsement, thanks.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

LAPUA brass has the ability to dramatically increase the following of almost any caliber if that tells you anything. Okay, to be fair it has the reputation & has proven itself time & time again to increase the following of "what's hot" in whatever shooting discipline at hand as far as caliber goes.

We spend a lot of $$ on our rifles/optics to try to get the most accuracy/velocity/consistency/safety /etc, etc, etc so why stop at brass??

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

LHill,
I completely agree with you. I think the introduction of 260 Lapua brass into the 260 Remington/6.5x47/6.5 Creedmoor decision making process will change how often anything other than the 260 Remington is choosen in the US.

The 260 Lapua brass alone shouldn't cause people who already have any of those cartridges to change. But for people considering which one to buy, the 260 Lapua brass will be a big consideration in favor of the 260 Remington.

In Europe, where the 6.5x55 and 6.5x47 are already sort of the "go to" cartridges, I don't think the 260 Lapua brass will make much of a difference.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

The Win brass that I have used recently has been hit or miss. I have received some crappy virgin brass that has had loose primer pockets from day 1. I NEVER have issues with Lapua brass and have had some 308 Lapua brass that I fired over 24 times and it still shoots fine and primer pockets still solid. I have even shot some STIFF (read...waaay over 60,000 psi)loads in some of it with NO issues. The Lapua ALWAYS nets me many many more reloads than any other brand. Forget Federal. It is the worst brand I have ever used. Way too soft. It is somewhat consistent and good for a few loads, but doesn't last very long.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

Of the domestic brass, I would go with Winchester hands down. Deburr the flash holes, uniform the primer pockets, and sort for weight, throwing the worst few pieces out and you should be GTG. That said, I am using Lapua for my 243. It's that good.

Re: Best 243 brass - USA made - WW or FC?

Thanks guys, have to say I never 'wrung out' my FC/WW brass in the past to see what their brass life.
