Owned a Remy 5R and am looking to upgrade as I was made an offer I couldn't pass up, $2k! I paid about $1K and had Robar coat it so the stainless barrel was black. I looked at GAP's and the like but don't have the cash for another $3K+ gun. (have a REPR) What would you all do with $2K to spend. I already have glass and might be able to stretch it a few hundred more if needed.
thanks,

Trued Rem 700 action $650. (bugholes)
Rock Creek Barrel $300. (bugholes)
Chambered & Treaded $250. (local gunbutcher)
Timney Trigger $125.
Manners T-2 $415
MCS Chassis $360.
2 Flush Cups $30.
Badger rail for bipod $45.

Total $2175. I call that close enough, and better than anything off the shelf.

While I do not personally have experience with this combo... from reputation I would say:

Tikka T3 Scout-$750
Chassis (Whiskey 3, XLR or others)-$750

$1500 and it seems like it would be a fantastic shooter for the money. I planning on trying this combo myself, just to see what I can get out of it for the $$$.

Have $500 bucks left to buy ammo!!!

Re: Best 308 bolt action for $2K or less

Bob's got a good list and the best idea if you want to build new. Otherwise look in the for sale section here on the Hide. I have seen GAP rifles and other customs with low round counts selling for around the 2K mark.

I was looking at the similar scenario ...a drop in for my AICS Chassis............

I would agree with this, but not for $2k or less, new. If you are okay with used rifles, that does widen your options, but also adds unknown variables.

Double check on that information. Karey Bruner left GAP a long time ago. I believe he left since December 2010.

Re: Best 308 bolt action for $2K or less

ive had 2 fn spr's. one with the hinged floorplate and the other with the mag system.

if i were to do it again, i would get the one with the hinged floorplate. i wasnt a huge fan of the factory mags.

other than needing pillar bedded, they were a solid package.

Re: Best 308 bolt action for $2K or less

That TRG was a good deal.

In a new rifle, FN SPR A2. Mike at Tactical Coordination is selling them for $1495. The extra cash could be put toward aftermarket DBM and/or pillar bedding, etc.
