I think anything over 7-08 for white tails inside 200yds would be over doing it. 7mm has great bullets for long range so if you go with one of the bigger 7mms you could definitely push that range out. Just an opinion though.
7-08 here as well. I actually used mine for double duty out to 1000 yes as well pushing the 162 eldm
Versatility -you never know what the future holds, the guy might want to shoot at 2000Y at some point. A revelation I know, but any cartridge can be loaded down.
He wants something that he can find brass for, he never said he wanted to change bolts or get a new action. A bunch of speculation going on here.
You made good points, but that's why there are oodles of other cartridges to choose from that use less powder, have lighter bullets with higher BC, "that recoil less". You won't see the 7's near as much at a class as the 6.5's etc.
Just me, but the smaller 7's don't do anything that the same capacity 6.5's and 6's(barring energy) do for the criteria you mentioned.
It's a matter of personal opinion then, affording 7 saum is one thing, for some that doesn't matter. A Class, at what distances? Load the Saum down with lighter bullets for normal distances, or for kids. Load it up for longer distances with heavier bullets and enjoy the benefits.
Muzzle brake, a heavier rifle to offset recoil, that's what I've done.
Though, if I had to choose one caliber and cartridge to do everything it'd be a 7 Saum. That's what I meant by versatility.
Single loading 180 ELDM's at a longer OACL, in a 7 Saum with a 7 twist, man that's some serious ballitics.

Hornady just released a 7wsm factory load w the Eld-x bullet. Rumor has it they will be releasing 7wsm brass. Should be fine for hunting!!
I’m a 7mm fan too. These are my top choices in no particular order 280 AI, 7mm-08, or 284 Winchester.
IDK man, assuming you already have a 7 WSM it may be easier just to stick with that.
I just picked up 500 pieces of 7 WSM Bertram brass today at $1.30 each. Doesn't seem too hard to find especially given hornady will be rolling it out their door here shortly as well for another option.
That said if you don't already have a 7 WSM then yeah there is easier calibers to find brass for, but a little looking and it can be had.

7LRM - Brass is not belted and easy to get, I use H1000 which is also easy to find, I’m getting 2850 FPS from a 22” Barrel and over 3000 with my 24” shooting 180g hybrids. Recoil is not bad. Very easy to load for.
I shoot a 7wsm and have had trouble finding brass. Several months ago I bought some off of Josh at Copper Creek.
