Retired AF, but no, I've never done any shooting on base.
In fact, I was never stationed there, but did work on base for a while after retirement.
Nearly all of my shooting lately has been at the Shoot Shack because it's 20 minutes away.
Manatee is nearly an hour and with the recent regime changes, I've avoided going there.
We'll see how JTAC Ranch works out. They still haven't responded to my request for info, so maybe I'll have to hit them up again.
It's also 20 minutes from here.
I've never found anything sold in the store that is even remotely as good as home brew Ed's Red.
Fig's recipe:
1 part Dexron II, IIe or III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)
1 part Kerosene
1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits
1 part Acetone
1 part Kroil
1 part Lanolin
You don't have to be precise. I've seen people omit the acetone because they have Ni finished pistols, but the acetone, like the ATF, is a magic ingredient.
I made a couple of gallons in a plastic gas can, a couple of years ago, and still have most of it. I put it in those little, needle bottles for fly tying head cement so I can apply just what I want just where I need it. I have the stuff to make more and it really never goes bad. So that's a lifetime supply for about $40. I highly encourage anyone who cares about and is serious about cleaning to give it a try. You will never pay for expensive "gun cleaners" again.
That and an ammonia tincture (anhydrous ammonia and rubbing alcohol) for copper is all you could possibly need.
