Great post. Love history. Many of us have never heard of the air rifle Lewis and Clark had along on the journey. Own Volume 6 of the Moulton / Nebraska books (mostly their Oregon times) and will look for air rifle demonstrations in the text. Especially when they meet new Indian tribes to 'demonstrate' superior fire power.
22 shots under a minute. Multiple speed loaders to put 22 more rounds in it in a few seconds. Large caliber and would go through a 1" board at 100 yards - enough to kill a human. Took 1500-2500 pumps to fill up the stock with air - 800 psi.
More information about it in an American Rifleman show. Including the guys who found the Lewis & Clark air gun. They build a replica and shoot it. Part 1/2:
