I need a scope for a Savage 10FP. Main use will be target shooting at 100 yards, but I may shoot out to 600 yards on occasion. I am OK with fixed power. Need to spend 300 or less. My current thoughts are the SWFA SS 10x or the Bushnell 3200 10x. What are some other scopes I can check out.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

I have a bushnell 3200 10x and I think for the money its great. You might also want to check out the sightron line. They have a good warranty. Also the Fullfield TAC line of scopes from Burris. I handled one of them today and they had pretty good clarity and brightness.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

Bushnell 3200 10X mil dot is a great little scope. Excellent tracking and lots of internal travel. If it had side focus and etched glass reticle it would be just about perfect. I've noticed a tendancy for the wire reticle in them to flare out and become almost invisible when any sunlight enters the eyepiece of the scope.

Another scope you might want to look into is the FM Optics (Famous Maker) 4-14X44 mil dot. It's nearly identcle to the Falcon Menace 4-14X44 FFP with the exception of the plain mil dot reticle. Glass is pretty decent for the price, about on par with the SS scopes. They have 75 to 80 MOA of internal travel with 1/4 moa adjustments, so a 20moa base would be probably be required for dialing in anything beyond about 800 yards. They go for $155.00 here: http://www.223cal.com/catalog.php?prod=FMT414

SS 10X-tried and true performer.
Bushnell 3200 10XMD-tried and true performer.

The Super Sniper has a 30mm tube so when you upgrade you will probably have usable rings, the Bushy is a 1" tube.

The Super Sniper has parallax adjustment, the Bushy's I've had are fine, but not as clear at 100yds as they were further out. Later when you upgrade your optics on the big gun, a Super Sniper is perfect for a rimfire trainer as it can focus down to within 10m.

Falcon 4-14FFP with matching reticle and turrets would probably be worth the extra $$ if you want a variable. I have no first hand experience with them, but many I trust here do have hands on and give them a thumbs up.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

I have a Millett TRS-1 on my 10Fp and love it. It is a great scope for the money. Especially the new ones with 1/4MOA clicks and come up counters. It is a very solid optic and has survived a few decent falls (off a table in the wind, from leaning up down directly onto the scope on concrete and a few onto hard dirt), and has retained zero through it all. Great scope and Millett are great people when I've called them for warranty help on other items (lost screws for rings and bases, never had to call about the scope).

That said, If I were doing it again. I'd probably spend the extra $100 and buy the Falcon Menace 4-15X42. FFP mils really kick ass once you've used them.

Now if only Millett or Falcon would make a 4-16X42 or 50mm with an FFP version of Millett TRS-1 Reticle, .1Mrad clicks, and a rheostat recessed into the side parallax S&B/Hensoldt style. Or if it wasn't FFP, at least it could be a 4-16X with the Mils calibrated at 8X with a detent like on the Millett so that they would be 2 Mils at base power, 1Mil at the detent, and .5 mil at full magnification....

Is he using the WOTAC scope?

They have many scopes on their site under $300.00, including the dreaded NCStar tactical line....
I've heard good things about the WOTAC scopes though.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

I just got the new 1/4 moa Millett TRS 1,I have not shot with it yet, but my first impressions of it are very good. It seems well made, looks good, feels good with lots more features then the two fixed powers you mentioned.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

The fixed 10X 30mm tube Super Sniper gets my vote for somewhere in the $300 range.... It's great on light gathering, optical clarity, keeping zero....It's the best bang for the buck as far as I'm concerned.....Plus resale value is top notch.....use is for a year, take good care of it and resell the scope for about the same as you bought it for....Not many scopes in the $300 range can do that....If any......SmokeRolls

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

I have a Mark 4, Bushnell 6500 tactical, and two Super snipers love them all and would not have the Bushy and Leupold if ss's had a variable power scope.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

What does everyone think about Barska SWAT Tactical models? Also what is the advantage of having a larger objective lense so a 50mm vs a 44mm?

I use quite a few budget scopes among my rifles, and over the years have gone through quite a few different brands searching for the decent ones out there. IMHO, you're better off staying away from Barska for long range applications. Some of them make a decent scope for just punching paper at 100 yards, but most have several things against them once the range increases.

-All but their 3.5-10X model use 1/8" clicks, which becomes a pain to calculate for and dial in for extended ranges.
-Most versions I've seen and used have had very little internal adjustment for reticle elevation/windage, around 35-40 MOA of total travel
-Eye relief tends to be short (shorter than advertised) on most models. On magmum rifles, count on being bitten. Often.
-Like most Chinese manufactured scopes, the exit pupil gets incredibly small once the magnification gets cranked up above about 16X. On the 40X versions, it's almost impossible to get a clear sight picture on max magnification, any slight movement of your head and the view through the scope goes black.
-Light transmission through the scope also becomes problematic as magnification is increased. If you can manage to maintain sight picture through the scope while adjusting the magnification level, the effect is very similar to turning down the dimmer knob of a light switch. Magnification goes up, everything gets darker. On the 40X versions especially, things get very dim.

The Larger 50 or 56mm Objective lenses are supposed to gather more light. Combined with using a larger 30mm tube, it should allow more light transmission through the scope for a brighter image. From my experience, you probably wont notice this on Barska scopes. Their internal construction seems to negate any benefits of the larger tubes and lenses.

Re: Best optics for $300 or less

I assumed at a certain level (quality, control, service), some should go without saying. Such as scopes which come with package deals, and if you move your head 1/4" in any direction, the picture disappears. Or the eye relief is 2". Or they blow up 200 rounds later. This will restrict the list at the bottom of pricing (say, $200).

sorry about the resurrection...noticed too late.

A big yes... in 10x or 16x. They are awesome scopes for the cash.
