Gunsmithing Best place to get Cerakote

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

The kit comes with a beaker, paint filters, the cerakote and hardener. The refill only has the cerakote and hardener. You need to measure it it accurately but you can probably get a beaker from a local school supply store, and filters from a paint store.

Fall over easy to mix, ratio is given with the instructions. Prep is important, I would recommend aluminum oxide blast, but I have used coarse surface prep pads successfully too. Can't get the metal too clean, heating it to full temp to burn off contaminates then letting it cool before coating seems to work well for me.

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

I love harbor freight! Great help with the vid. I don't have access to a blast cabinet, so would 120grit alum oxide sand paper work?
Do they charge a ton to go to a shop and have them sand blast?

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

Don't take shortcuts on metal prep. It will not come out well. You really should do an aluminum oxide blast, clean metal with brake keen, bake for 30 min at 300 degrees, let it cool then spray and bake. It sounds like a lot of work, but if you don't do it you are likely to not get good adhesion and you will be pissed you have go redo it.

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

one thing every town has... headstones. somewhere in your town is a place that makes and sells cemetary markers. they will usually sandblast for a decent price. since its a firearm, they may do it while you wait. if not, check out the sandblasters at harbor freight or craigslist. pretty cheap.

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

keepin mind if you are going to use an HVLP gun they are designed to be sprayed 12-18 inches from the the body panels of a car so lots of cerakote will be coming out, which makes it very easy to get a thicker than desired coating.......not to say one is better it will just take some gettin used to

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

I just read up on it and it says it is an air cure with the durability of a baked on. I wonder if it is better than air cure gunkote or cerakote?

Re: Best place to get Cerakote

I called today about trying some and they only sell it in 1/2gal or more, plus you need an etching primer, reducer and catalyst. I was going to be about $150 for the whole kit. Not much considering it would do a lot of guns. I am going to try it and let you know how it works.

This is not Cerakote to the best of my knowledge, but you are welcome to call Brian or Brandon at NIC Industries and have it confirmed.
