What is the best red dot for an AK, one that sets low to the bore for under $250? Was thinking about Burris Fastfire.

Vortex makes some to look at in that price range. Don't look at site prices though as they are MSRP. I put a link to Liberty Optics for some street prices for you.

At RockCastle in September we had several of these mounted on Shotguns and they held up awesome.

The fastfireII/III, sparc and trs-25 are all good options... They are all fairly light at i believe .9oz, 5.2oz and 3.7oz respectively. They all leave a fairly different imprint.
Are you considering a dedicated hanguard mount? Is that a factor of a different budget?
-The Trs-25 is a great value- I see them often for $75
-Vortex's in my opinion is quite a bit nicer than the bushnell (dot, glass,controls etc...)
-The Fastfire is great and its size sets it apart from the other two. I am not familiar with he newer III but have heard its improvements have negated some of the frustrating aspects of its predecessor.

I have both the trs 25 and the vortex sparc. The vortex is nicer but for the cash the bushy is hard to beat. I have the bushnell first strike as well and so far it's ok I just wish it had manual brightness settings I tend to like my red dots a little brighter than most people.

Also on the vortex the dot seems cleaner and the 2x magnifier is a nice bonus compared to the bushy trs 25

Vortex strikefire works real well I have one on shotgun for turkey hunting and I likes it so well I bought another one for on a .22 mp5 clone. The last one I bought was from amazon a few months back it was 165 bucks with free shipping now they have one for 156 and free shipping from Optic Safe. Also if you sign up for an amazon card they give you 30 bucks off your purchase so it would only run you 126 bucks.

I have the Vortex SPARC on my walking around AR and a Burris Fast Fire II on a M1 Carbine that's in my bug out pack. Both are great optics for the cost and work well for my uses. Can't go wrong with either.
My other ARs and walk about rifles wear Aimpoint Micros and other higher end optics, but honestly, they all work the same for every day use.

+1 for the vortex strikefire. I ran one for over 1000 rounds on my AR and never had an issue with it. Go with the red dot only version the model that has red and green dots does not get as bright and can be a little hard to see in bright daylight. I could see my red dot only version excellent in all lighting conditions.

Our fixed base Micro Dot on an Ultimak rail is my favorite AK setup. Allow for cowitness. We are out but have a batch shipping next week. TRS-25 works well on the Ultimak as well.

Palmetto state has the vortex strikefire on sale right now for 119. I just left bass pro shops they did a price match. Looks great for $120.
