Hey all, i'm looking at buying a Savage bolt action rifle and am pretty sure i want it in .308 due to practicality. I am open to maybe getting it in .300 win mag, does the "cool" factor outweigh the .308's price? Anyways, which Savage model would you recommend for long range shooting up to about 600 yds?

Re: Best Savage .308 version for long range

10FP-SR, Or the 10FCP-McMillan.

...but for "just" 600yd, don't count out the 10FP-SR in 223 Remington. It'll do just fine at that range with 68-77gr offerings by Federal, Hornady, Black Hills, Southwest Ammo, etc.

Or even the 12fv and get your own stock. That way it is the way you like it. It really boils down to how much you want to spend right out the gate.

Re: Best Savage .308 version for long range

If you can afford it, get the McMillan stock.

308 vs 300WM... If you have to ask, 308 is the answer. 300WM is awesome and does great things, but it's a hotrod, is expensive to feed, provides way more power/energy than is generally required, eats barrels and has a lot of recoil.

If you will reload, or don't mind a but of increase in ammo costs, you may want to consider a 6.5mm - either 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor. Both are very nicely suited to target shooting like we do, and HANDILY outperform 308 while still remaining "moderate".

Are you gonna just strictly shoot at a range? Any hunting?

I picked up the new model Savage 10PC in .308 this past winter.

Last week I had it out shooting some loads I worked up. Was ringing steel easily at 550 yds.

Cabela's is starting to have them in stock in their stores.

A buddy has the Choate stock on his Savage. He seems to like it well enough, although it's a heavy beast.

Re: Best Savage .308 version for long range

For 600 and under... Pick one

The F/TR, 10fcp in hs precision, 10fcp in McMillan, 10fcp in choate tactical

Those may be a best bet for consistency and shootability.

I had the cabelas special 10fcp in a choate tactical stock, it is now being changed to a 260 in an adjustable McMillan a5, but as a stock rifle was great.

But really, about any rifle will work for ya based on what you've given us.

Re: Best Savage .308 version for long range

Another vote here for the F/TR. (My bias, I own one) Although I do like look of the 10FCP HS.
And, knowing what I know now I'd get a long 260 barrel on order right off the bat.

If you must go with a choate stock, I highly recommend the choate tactical. It is a bit homely, but it is a very good stock for the price.

The ultimate varmint works well, but the thumbhole just isn't right for most people.

Don't waste your time with the ultimate sniper model.

I think you would be doing yourself a huge favor by investing in the HS Precision model. It is an excellent stock, comes with a detachable magazine and is head and shoulders better than the choate.
I recommend the HS Precision over the McMillan only because the McMillan isn't bedded and if memory serves, it only has one pillar.

Honestly, the McMillan is a better stock, but you would have to pay someone about 200 bucks to properly bed it (unless you are willing to risk doing it yourself)

they build a 110BA in .308 which closley resembles the 110BA in 300wm and 338LM, if you check out their web site there are many to choose from. i have also fired one of their 308s that come in the mcmillan stock set up with a 20MOA base and a NF optic. i must say awesome package
