So here is my story, I have just been getting into the 1000yd shooting relm and really enjoying it. I am just finishing a 243ai build and it needs some glass. I am going to try and start going to a few of the tactical competition shoots, mostly to learn and have fun i know I won't really be able to be competitive for awhile but oh well. i will also be shooting p-dogs out to at least 1000yds.

One of the most important things for me is getting a scope that has a good reticle for range estimation. i am very new to ranging with a reticle so I don't know what works best.

I know most responses are going to be to get a NF, but I would also like to consider IOR's,Bushnell 4200/6500, premier reticle leupold.

I appreciate your time and input.

I would take a used NF over all of those other brands in that price range. You cant beat the proven reliability of the NF!

I'll second the Horus recommendations. I tend to go for a lower magnification optic, but I'm also not interested in doing a lot of shooting at 1000m and beyond. I've done one local match with a USO equipped with the Horus reticle and recently spent a lot of time with the Horus A-Trag software on PDA, with some Falcon scopes being passed around. I have wanted for nothing.

As for NF, I'll go for their product once they get their FFP stuff on line. Until then I will look elsewhere, as the price vs. capability just isn't there in my view. NF does make an excellent optic, though. The way things are now they are not as useful for range finding as they should be, and lately have been cumbersome in conjunction with the PVS-22's and 24's.

I would say the NP-R1 or MLR would be the easiest to accurately range with.

I love and own both NightForce and Horus Vision Scopes.

If my budget is $1200 then my pick would be out of the Horus Vision line of scopes.

This used Horus Vision Falcon scope currently for sale here on the hide, looks like an excellent candidate.

anybody with experience with the bushnell 6500 series i looked through one today out to about 1500 yards and was impressed with the glass but have no idea about the clicks and repeatability.

    thanks scott

Street price on a 6500 is under $700. A good value, not a Schmidt but a fine scope.

Hey Scott- Chances are that any real "tactical" match in which you are going to participate is going to have a a moving target stage. For such, a FFP scope is indispensible.

Prior to buying a new scope, go shoot a match with what you've already got. This will give you a chance to see what your current gear lacks, and to check out some of the other competitors kits to get a first hand idea of what you want.

If you decide that a SFP is what you want, my buddy has a couple mint condition Zeiss Diavari 6-24x56 SFPs he is about to sell (One illum, one not). While they cost more than a NF (and your $1200 limit), they are also heads and shoulders above them in quality. If I were to use an SFP it would be a Zeiss--without question. Both have mil-dot reticles and mil knobs (actually 1/2 cm knobs).

Shoot me a pm if you want to folow up.

I've got two IOR scopes and one gets used monthly at a minimum, dialing in various corrections. It has proven to be very repeatable. The MP-8 reticle is real quick on range estimations. I have gotten to where I am plus or minus 10 yards out to 500 when compared to a range finder.

Finding a used NF for under $1200 is not that easy.
