I just got my glock 35 (gen 4, if that makes a difference)...what's the best thigh rig holster for it? I'm thinking getting a light on it; but not sure-so opinions on both ways are needed. This rig will be put to some hard use-I just got put on the SWAT team here...thanks

Re: best tactical holster

After reviewing numerous post's and video I can no longer recommend the Serapa Holster as I did earlier. It can be made to fail very easy with just snow and or loose dirt/gravel. Something you will roll around in one day if you're an LEO long enough.

The G35 is like the G34, the nose of the slide/barrel will stick out slightly but GTG. I beleive holsters for the 17 will work for the G34/35 as well. I know an LEO in Midland TX on their SWAT team, they're changing over from the G35 to the G23 for weight/length reasons. Good luck

Re: best tactical holster

The only two that come to mind are Blackhawk Serpa and Safariland 6004.

The 6004 has a long history of this kind of work, but the leather lining is kind of grabby. I don't really like the suede lining, but the point was to give people some retention when the hood is not locked so that a raid could be conducted with the hood not locked if the operator felt that retention wasn't going to be a major issue (when not fast roping etc). That would of course save you the trouble and wasted time of unlocking the hood during a draw.

I've never used the SERPA but it's pretty straight forward if you've used blackhawks other products.

I tend to stay away from thigh rigs but they do have their place and that is when using bulky high profile armor. That's when a thigh rig is nice to keep the armor from interfearing with unholstering.

Re: best tactical holster

I would check with your other swat team members and see what works for them, see if you have some sort of policy on holsters.

BUT, take into account all people are different, built different, so what works for one may or may not work for others.

The best option is to try several, try them out while you shoot some action pistol matches. That will give you a pretty good ideal what works while you "run, dodge, and jump".

As to lights, I spent 20 years as a cop, doing hundreds if not thousands of building searches, most alone. I wouldn't put a light on my gun for love nor money. Again, that's just my opinion, based on how I worked.
Personally I wouldn't have a thigh holster if you give me one, but that's me, some people like them, some don't.

Running the Safariland ALS on a drop legg and loop (3 screws to x-fer rig) 6004 model. Ran 2 3 Gun matches with it and love it. Full retetion in a natural relaese locsation vs. pressing near the trigger

Re: best tactical holster

+1 for the Safariland 6004.

As for the Serpa: more and more trainers are banning them from class. Here are some official/unofficial statements on the subject:

Larry Vickers: Serpas banned from training courses
source: Vickers - M4 Carbine

Gunsite: Serpas not officially banned, but not recommended
source: Cory Trap - 'Hide

ToddG/Pistol Training: Serpas banned as of this year (2012)
Source: Pistol Training.com

FLETC: Pending verification, Serpas are banned
Source: <span style="text-decoration: line-through">Pending</span> Update - Found the source I was thinking of: FLETC Serpa Memo - Officer.com

EAG Tactical - Pat Rogers: "Serpas Suck"
Source: EAG/Pat Rogers - Lightfighter

John Murphy (FPF Training) has banned them: FPF Training Blog - Serpa

The list continues to grow...just some food for thought...

Re: best tactical holster

Another for for the 6004. The suede lining can be a pain if you have your draw angle slightly off i.e. dragging it against one side or the other of the holster vs pulling straight up. However, that suede does "break in".

For my uses, I never run it "hood down" so the "grabby" qualities are useless to me. Mine seems to have broken in over thousands and thousands of draw strokes. I found early on though that keeping the outside of the gun light lubed in a thin coating of militec helped considerably with "grabbing".

Re: best tactical holster

I've run the 6004 for years on both my Sig P226 with light and Glock 31 with light. I've never had problems with them. Just make sure you adjust the height and wear it properly.

Re: best tactical holster

I have been happy with the durability of the SafariLand 6004 series, they have done very well over several deployments. I have found a few items which better tailer this large holster more to my needs. Check out G-Code Holster http://www.tacticalholsters.com/mm5/merchant.mvc I haven't used any of their holsters but I have been utilizing alot of their accessories to adapt my holster to many different platforms.
This is one platform I sometimes run with a holster, I found that instead of buying several of the same holsters that I needed a quick disconnect device. G-Code had just the answer. I have bought 3 of the RTI Molle adapter plates so I can move my holster between the different setups.
