I'm building a rifle up from my Stevens and am trying to find a good trigger for around $100. I've looked at Rifle Basix and SSS trigger. My friend told me that both of these could be a little dangerous if you were to drop the rifle. He specifically said the SSS was "fragile." He has experience with both but am looking for some more opinions.

After adjusting my triggers, I cock the bolt, and then drop the rifle on its butt to concrete from a height of 6 inches. If the trigger breaks, it's too light. I wouldn't do that on a benchrest gun, but I don't shoot benchrest, and I consider that test essential for tactical or hunting rifles - because they will get dropped at some point.

Neither have I and mine is set to 1.5 lbs. had it for 9 years and I have beat the hell out of it.

I've used both SSS and Timmey... both have worked very well. I also did an at home tirgger job on one of my pre-accutrigger Savages that works very well if you are patient. If you have the $80 though, go for the aftermarket.

Email me or PM me if you want the instructions on the at home trigger job.. I think I still have an electronic copy.

i have a rifle basix in my 200 set at 3/4 lb.

no slamfires, the safety still works, did a 24" drop test - no accidental missfires (unloaded).

the rifle had some trigger adjustability to it, but the replacement was worth it. don't know if it's the "best" but it works and has been safe for me. also have one in my 22mag (use much for hunting) and my 22 bench rifle. no problems with any.

I have the SS Competetion trigger on three of my rifles. Two of them are running at one, to one and a half pounds. Both are completely safe, checked by impact against the cement floor, and ramming the bolt closed to check for the firing pin following the bolt. The third used to be on a benchrest setup. I set it under eight ounces. Real hard working of the bolt would cause the firing pin to follow. Now that rifle is a 25-06 for deer hunting, and is set at about two pounds pull, but very crisp.

Under $100, and very recommendable.

^^^ Was it easy to install? What model was it and where did you get it? Great group BTW.

I used a Timney on my pre-accutrigger 110. It took about 40 minutes to install and get adjusted to around 1.5 lbs and still had plenty of weight adjustment left. It succesfully passed my test of slamming the rifle as hard as I could into the floor several times and letting it fall from waist high once. I had it adjusted to the minimum, but the firing pin wouldn't stay cocked unless you closed the bolt gently. Curiously, it would pass a drop test when set that low and dropped from about a 12".

I have two SSS triggers on two different pre-accutrigger rifles. One, a 300 win Mag, and the other a 243. I did have to pull the action and re-adjust the trigger in the 300 Win Mag. The sear stopped engaging and hence, would not load the spring. After re-adjusting the trigger, I added nail polish to the screws, and it has been fine ever since.
It is a drop in fix. That said, some slight modifications MAY be needed, and make sure your saftey will still work. The included instructions were fine.

I'm running two Timneys in pre accutrigger Savages. I had some troubles with one at first because it was improperly adjusted for sear engagement by the installer. I put the second one in myself and re-adjusted the one in the first rifle. I'm very happy wtih the Timneys.
