I'm at the stage in my build to pick up a quality bi-pod and was looking to get some opinions. Currently I have a knock off Harris and it seems to get the job done. I've been looking at the Atlas and was curious if it would be a better fit for me versus a Harris. Right now most of my shooting has been done from a bench, although it will be transitioning into prone with the new range that I'll be shooting at. I don't currently participate in any sort of comps but it won't be out of the question in the future. It will be going on a Manner's stock once I get that in and I plan on mounting it with a rail. Any advice will be helpful, I just don't want to put the money down on a Harris only to spend more on an Atlas.

If the Atlas ends up being my choice should I get the quick release or just the standard clamp on? If I were to get the standard clamp on and wanted the quick release down the road is it possible to just get the release portion?

Honestly, for your stated needs, a Harris should be fine. You'll find that the real Harris is better quality than the knock off. Of course I would not argue with anyone that says the Atlas is "better" since they both have their place and application. You wouldn't go "wrong" with an Atlas for sure.

In any case, if you do get a Harris, there is no problem mounting it on a rail there a few good QC adapter choices out there for rail mount.

Owning both the Harris and the Atlas, I'd say get the Harris with the swivel and leg notches. The Atlas's are nice, but I prefer the push button extension of the Harris.

Any of you guys have experience with this? It's an adapter so that you can have the left to right swivel.

Does the type of shooting you do (or plan to do) necessitate a lot of left-to-right panning? If not, you're adding a lot of unnecessary bulk to your rifle. And it's not like you can't pan side-to-side shooting off of a ruck or bags or a barricade, or even a standard bipod so long as you're not in a gravel pit.

I'm just looking at what is out there. Right now I don't think I would need it. There is always more experience I can gain, just seeking opinions for now.

Since it looks like I'll be going with a Harris is there any reason to really mount it on a rail vs a sling stud? I don't see any reason why but I don't want to end up mounting it to a rail if there are no advantages.

Rail-mount if you plan on moving the bipod from rifle to rifle as you'll be able you get some kind of QD attachment. Otherwise, stud-mount and save a couple of bucks.

I'm sure it'll fit the bill just fine. Thanks Coldfuzion for posting the Pod-Loc, I probably would have ended up ordering just a plain arm.
