I'm getting a new build underway and looking for some advice. Itll have a Lapua bolt face and a TBAC 338 Ultra. Will be used for hunting so barrel length is an issue. Never had anything with a shorter barrel. Should I do a Norma? Lapua? Am I a retard ? Just don't want to end up with something ridiculously long and still want good performance.

How short are you planning on running the barrel?

Just asking as port pressures begin to rise fast once you get below 20” with these supermags which could stress the can (TBAC can provide addl guidance in terms of min recommended bbl length for the 338 ultra based on cartridge).

338 norma/lapua have similar ballistics but the lapua improved could be an option if seeking to get the most out of a heavy bullet (300g+).

300 Norma can be considered also. The Normas may be a better option if you are running a DBM.

You going to reload for it?

I'll certainly be reloading. I don't know how short I want it, but the 338 Ultra is rated for a 16" Lapua if I'm not mistaken. I basically just want something as short as possible while still being very effective . Leaning toward a 338 Norma with lighter Hammer bullets to maintain speed and take bigger game at longer than Fudd distances.

Can’t go wrong with the 338 norma, 20” bbl would prob give you handiness/weight savings while keeping velocity and pressure within desired ranges....perhaps flute the bbl for a little more weight savings...What action you going to run?

Saw in your other thread you have a builder all picked out that seems to know what you need....Sounds like it will be a sweet L/R hunting rig. Post a pic or two when it’s together....GL!

Try to decide on a bullet and make sure you can load them to fit in a mag. A friends .338 with 300 Berger’s won’t msg feed and it’s a pain for a hunting rifle.

Have you bought the action already? For my hunting rig to utilize my 338 Ultra, I built a 338 Sherman Short with a Lone Peak Ti action and a carbon barrel finished at 20". I mag feed and Im not shooting anything heavier than the Berger or Accubond 250 gr, so a short action is right in my wheel house. 250's running @ 2835fps is plenty for my ladies. Holds 1175 lb/ft of energy @ 1250 yards, that's good enough for this Fudd...
