Bipod placement...

Got a RPR in 6.5CM.

Got a Atlas BT46-LW17 coming in tomorrow.

If I've been reading the forum right, it would appear that I need to have the legs fold forward, and place them as far to the front as possible to minimize rear drift translating to barrel movement.

Is this right, or am I mis-reading things?

in general the farther the "better", helps limit wiggle effects

guys will chime in that you dont need to go that far out if you have perfect recoil control bla bla bla

leg folding direction only matters for bipods that do not lock in place, like a harris

for a Atlas that locks in mechanically (button in a hole), its up to you

This is how I have mine set up.

when I shoot prone, I keep mine as far forward as possible. I use an MPA so mine is out on the spigot. when I'm shooting positional, I put it back on the chassis, sandwiching it between the bipod and the magazine. then I can grab the NV rail, bag, and Harris bipod RRS knob. this helps me stabilize and steer the rifle into the target

As far forward as supported by the weapon without flex, there are some threads where folks are loading the bipod and creating flex in some of the rails. If I read your question correctly you are also asking if the legs should be perpendicular to the barrel? If so i believe the answer is situational, prone and bench yes, on certain obstacles you may want angles forward or back depending on how you may need to load.
