Bolt locking closed with Hornady

Last trip to the range I thought I would try some of the Hornady that I had picked up when I first bought my 5r. I had fired half of the box months ago with no problems. This time 3 out of 5 rounds would lock up the bolt after fired. I would have to get up out of position hold the rifle tight with my off hand and slam up on the bolt handle to break it loose. I ran some FGMM through it, as this is what I usually shoot, and it cycled fine. I loaded 5 more Hornady and again 3 of the 5 jammed the bolt closed.I ran FGMM through it the rest of the day with no problem. Needless to say I won't be using that ammo again, but is there something I should look into? Is this common with 700s?

Re: Bolt locking closed with Hornady

Sounds like a pressure problem.

By any chance was the temperature higher (hotter) the day your bolt was sticking as compared with the previous time you shot that ammo with no problem?

Or, was the rifle warm (hot) from previously shooting when you loaded the Hornady rounds into it, then maybe you waited a little before starting to shoot (so the loads heated up)?

Any time you encounter the bolt sticking, a big mental red flag ought to go up that you may have an unsafe pressure problem.

Simply put, the ammo is loaded with too much powder for use in your rifle under those conditions which created higher pressures.

Re: Bolt locking closed with Hornady

I am out in Las Vegas so it was hot, but no hotter than it usually is. It was the first rounds i put through it, although my ammo can was in the sun for an hour or so before I was shooting this gun. Maybe the ammo had heated up too much from direct sun light? The Federal however was in the same ammo can sitting in the sun just as long and functioned fine.

I have also had some issues with Hornady ammo. My rifle is Tikka T3 Varmint in 6,5x55 SE. Sometimes the the bolt will not close, looks like the shell casings are poorly trimmed. I also use Lapua factory ammo and I have not had this problems with them.

Re: Bolt locking closed with Hornady

I have notice rounds that has excessive head space and I couldn't chamber them. It was the 140 A-Max match ammo, Vegas50 has experience the same. Not a common thing we've ran into but have encountered it.

Re: Bolt locking closed with Hornady

I get overpressure with the Hornady Superformance ammo in my LTR .308. The bolt gets sticky (not stuck) every round. I also get extruded primers, and ejector marks. Accuracy suffers also, so I don't buy or shoot the Superformance anymore, it's just too hot for my setup, I guess. FGMM runs great as always.

I'm pretty sure it was 308 Win 178gr BTHP Superperformance Match. The rifle is a Rem 700 5R with about 350 rounds down the pipe. I started off with Hornady as it's what was around. I tried different loads and weights to try figure out what it liked best and then I found the Federal Match which it seems to love, shooting about 3/4 MOA with my limited skills. As I said it never had a problem when it was brand new cycling any of the cartriges I fed it. Not until 200 rounds later of FGMM 168gr did I figure I'd finish off the 10 I had left and this happened.

Wow... another instance of the superformance ammo with high pressure.

I wonder if Hornady has been alerted. It's becoming quite a common theme.

Re: Bolt locking closed with Hornady

They know some have problems. Most have been with semi autos but it happens in bolt guns as well.

I figured it was Superformance as I have never seen many problems with any other Hornady ammo. Give them a call and let them know the lot number.
