Boonie Hat for shooting into sun?

This time of year I'm shooting almost directly into the sun or at just an angle when prone. I usually shoot two eyes open with my scopes and now I have to close my left eye to get a good sight picture and keep the sun from blinding me. I've used a towel over my head and scope but it's a PITA every time I cycle the bolt the towel moves and falls in front of my face. It is warm, but far to annoying to continue. I've even moved some of the range trash cans around to make a wall, but that's not always an option when the range master is around and there are still gaps as the sun moves. Tried cardboard too but getting good placement and setting up to not blowover is a pain as well.

Would a boonie hat or other wide brim hat be a good option? I hate shooting with glasses on as with my big German honker, the plastic on the bridge of my nose gets in the way good sight alignment. This has been bugging me for some time, finally need a better solution. What are you guys doing?

Thanks guys,
Hawk

You can try a long piece of card stock or plastic (like a "For sale" or "For rent" sign you can get at a hardware store) and attach it to the brim of your ball cap with binder clips.

A few places sell long-bill ball caps specifically for anglers and rifle shooters:

+1 for sinister
Cabelas, Basspro and other shops have fishing hats with large brims and a neck flaps. Works great

I didn't want to be the one to say it. Cool, I'll grab a boonie and shemagh and see how they work.

Yeah, baseball hats just don't work for me b/c the brim is always hitting something.

^^^ This. I use a short-brimmed boonie that has been washed so much it's faded and soft. Break down the brim... When the brim is not enough, a Shemagh, bandanna or even something like mosquito netting is perfect.

There's a reason that scarves made the list with Spin-D and expensive rifles. And this is the reason...

Now that was funny... think of all the tail you wouldn't pull rocking that hat.

The Seattle Sombrero is hard to beat.

Hmmmm, that could be why I designed my FlexBrim ballcap...

Or sit on a witches hat... That hat is worthy of a baseball to the face at speed.

No offence if the bloke who posted it actually OWNS and wears that hat of course

Re: Boonie Hat for shooting into sun?

if the hat bothers you, an umbrella or one of those umbrella like things you use for hunting that you attach to a tree works pretty good attached to a post, tripod, etc. folds up with no interfereance from a hat brim.

i'm in the same boat as you, the sun (when it's out) almost directly in my face from noon onward.
