New to using a Hawkeye bore scope and was wondering about erosion of the throat and what to look for to tell how much has eroded? Anyone have an answer to what the eroded throat will look like in the bore scope?

Re: Borescope question

You will need to see what a barrel with a fresh cut chamber looks like to get a good idea of how a throat should look. It just takes looking down tons of barrels.

If you know what the reamer was that cut the chamber, and you know what the throat should have been, then you can gauge what it should look like. Thats really about it.

Re: Borescope question

Thanks, I had a feeliing it was not going to be easy to tell. Someone else had told me the best way was to use the Stoney Point to check the OAL of the bullet and if it will not reach the lands and grooves while staying in the case then whamo it is shot out. Any thoughts on this statement?

Re: Borescope question

If you look at a newer chamber the edges of the cuts will be crisp and sharp. The older the chamber is and the more it has been fired, the wearing of the corners will become worse. If you see pitting in the throat / lead areas the chamber has been shot quiet a bit with hotter loads. The area between the mouth of the case to the leads of the rifling is where most of the erosion will occure.

Re: Borescope question

I think it is fairly easy to see an eroded throat. You will see the rounded pitted edges, "crocidial texture" to rifleing for some distance. They will shoot very well, long after they look bad to a bore scope.
