Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

Re: Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

I got mine in from Triad last week and have used it a few times already. My only complaint is that I wish the torque setting was visible from the top side vs. the bottom.

I was amazed at the size of the whole kit, I think it's well worth the extra for the pouch and other tools in it.

Some guys told me that they would also prefer to have settings on top. On the other hand, this is a "double sided" tool, and I've had little choice... After certain hesitation on my part, I've decided it would be more logical to just insert the bit holder INTO the hex hole marked with appropriate torque value. Also, bit holder knob completely covers the laser etched mark from the "top", so it is not visible anyway when you use it.

Re: Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

I was one of those people who wanted to see what torque setting I was using while using it, and you(Boris) said the samething, now it makes perfect sense for the bit to be inserted into the desired torque, and so what if it's down while using it, knowing you selected the correct torque before using the tool is the most important thing, not seeing it while using it, I use Snap-On torque wrenches all the time at work, I select the torque I want to use, it goes click when I have achieved it, Borka is exactly the same, except the knob breaks over.

Re: Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

I think they are missing a trick by not having the torque setting level required for the AI retaining screws or the side securing screws. A wider in.lbs option, perhaps at the expense of having all 4 torque settings between 21-30 might be a popular option.

That makes sense, not a big deal overall.

An option for the AI spec and even the LMT MRP (140) would be great.

Re: Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

AI multi torque driver version by Borka Tools may be coming sometime in the future. At least, I've talked to AI at the Shot Show, and they appeared to be interested. We'll see what happens...

BTW, I got an impression that AI does not really insist on torqueing these small side panel screws to exact specs - side panels holding force does not directly affect accuracy of the rifle. It's my understanding that these specs were introduced to "tell the user" not to overtighten these screws, in order to prevent cracking of the plastic side panels and/or stripping of threads, and to keep all screws somewhat evenly tensioned in general. But I could be wrong thinking it was the main idea of assigning certain specs to these screws.

Considering current Borka driver dimensions and design, it feels like 140 inch-lbs. would be uncomfortable to apply with one hand only. With two hands, no problem. But offering the torque driver which needs both hands to operate does not look very promising to me. Need to give it a very serious thought.

Davide, you're very welcome. It was also good to meet your two friends from Italy and provide all of you with my tools. At the end of day, I'm pretty sure that getting them at the Shot Show was the fastest way to get hold of tools for you, and obviuosly, the least expensive one...

Re: Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

Hopefully in the next week or so I will be able to get to the range and see how the AE behaves at 72 in/lbs. If it's accurate and repeatable, then there is no reason that I can't continue to run the chassis at that torque setting.

I would like to see the Borka Driver go up to 89 in/lbs, but I don't know if that would take a drastic redesign or now.

Question for you and other SH members, who may want to contribute -

How about future design of 14 torque settings driver with the following pre-set values:

Side #1 (7 settings for scope/mount work) - 15,18,21,24,27,30,33 inch-lbs. (in 3 inch-lbs. increments)
Side #2 (7 settings for mount/action work) - 40,48,56,64,72,80,88 inch-lbs. (in 8 inch-lbs. increments)

Looks all right? 88 is perfectly fine to use instead of 89, consistency is a key.

Re: Borka Tools MG3 Kit review.

It will make it 0.4" longer, as it will add another, 7th, hex hole at the end of the driver arm. Need to check if people with small hands would be able to operate it with one hand only. Also, will need to use a bit stronger, most likely, custom spring inside...Everything else stays the same. Should fit in TAB pouch just fine.

Well, I do not yet have this proposed "15x88", and it would take at least several months to manufacture them, assuming that prototype stage shows promise. But if it works and production is launched, you can certainly buy just a driver. Both the existing 15x72 and this prospective 15x88 will fit into the TAB pouch together and along with all accessories (SRA).

There is possibly another way - to make just a quick detachable adapter (driver arm extension) to the existing 15x72 (MG3), with just one extra 88-90 inch-lbs. setting. Could be much less expensive alternative to the people who already have MG3 model. I'll be working on it also. In any case, I do understand the desire to have this extra setting for the people who own AI rifles. Somewhat similar adapter for 140 inch-lbs. can be also made, but it would likely look a bit ugly, and I'm not a big fan of ugly adapters.
