For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1900. When you are 14, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birth year with 22 million people killed. Later in the year, the Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until you are 20. Fifty million people die from it in those two years. Yes 50 million.

When you are 29, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, global GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy.

When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet.

When you are 41, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birth year, 75 million people perish in the war and the Holocaust kills six million.

At 52the Korean War starts and 5 million perish.

Approaching your 62nd birth year you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point for the Cold war. Life on our planet, as we know it, could have ended. Great leaders prevented it from happening.

At 64 the Vietnam War begins, and it doesn’t end for many years. Four million people die in that conflict.

As you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends. Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How do you survived all that? A kid in 1985 didn’t think their 85 year old grandparents understood how hard school was. Yet those grandparents (and now great grandparents) survived through everything listed above.

Perspective is an amazing art. Let’s try to keep things in perspective. Let’s be smart, help each other out, and we will get through all of this together. In the history of the world there has never been a storm that lasted. This too shall pass.

So embrace the suck and get it done.

Let me add to that just a touch. though born in 1900, August 8th actually, my Great-Grandmother moved to Canada from the Ukraine (IIRC) when she was 7 years old.

Everything else is pretty-much as you described, with the additions of 'first indoor plumbing', then the 'first telephone' and not to mention the 'first furnace' and such.

Gordon Sinclair Jr. had a little write-up in his column that said "And on this day, the eighth day, of the eighth month, of the eighty-eighth year, it is Mary Hayka's birthday! And she's 88."

Yeah, that happened. And my Baba lived to see her 97th birthday. They took her shotgun away from her at 95 because she started thinking her dog was a bear. Eyesight will do that to a person, I guess.

My grandfather was born in 1911. He went through all of that.

Additionally, he moved from Jackson, TN to Granite, OK to live with his aunt and uncle when he was 13 because both of his parents had died.

This earned him the privilege of farming 200 acres in SW Oklahoma from 1924 until he died in 2001. All those pictures you see of the black dust bowl days from the great depression...that was SW Oklahoma at that time. Ever see "The Grapes of Wrath"? Those are my people.

He lived just long enough to see 9/11 and the world enter a new war.

My grandmother was born in 1903. Her grandfather and his brothers owned a coal mine which was taken over during the civil war by the government and never returned. loved to listen to her stories.

You get to see this:
Isaiah 5:20 Living Bible (TLB)
20 They say that what is right is wrong and what is wrong is right; that black is white and white is black; bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.

My Dad was born in 1923, he was 6 when Wyatt Earp died. Airplanes were made of cloth and a novelty when he was a kid and he jumped out of one into German held France on June 6th, 1944. 25 years later he watched an American land on the moon. There were flu epidemics in 1957 and 1969 and he managed to live thru them without staying home for a year each time.

When my Dad was a young man he could order nearly any type of firearm he ever wanted by sending a letter or order form and cash or check to any gun sales company in America. By the time he was 45 years old his rights were under attack by rich, socialist elitists. This attack continued for another 40 years until his death. He told me many times, "This country is going to shit kid, I'm not going to live to see it but you will."

My Dad was born in the kitchen to their apartment, not uncommon in the 1920's. Unheard of today. My Dad was educated in a neighborhood school, not bused 30 miles for socialist blending experiments. For high school, he applied to and was accepted in "aviation high school", a three year school with a trade school program to teach you enough to be an A&P mechanic upon graduation. Trade schools are spit on today by socialist elites because they do not provide proper indoctrination to the peasants, only college is allowed or supported.

A lot can change in a lifetime. This is an extremely long period of relative peace, no full scale war or major conflict involving world powers directly for nearly 75 years. Almost no one alive today serves in the military. It is unlikely the majority of Americans would even fight to stop a land invasion of America. A surprising number of Americans, including many posting here would welcome a new Chinese communist installed government or American communist government if it promised them everything for free. I'm expecting to see it before I get my dirt nap.

My Grandfather was born in 1880 !! He lived to two weeks before his 104th B-Day. When he turned 100 we sat down with him at my Fathers place for B-Day Dinner and a pile of Cassettes to record his stories. He sipped on a couple shot glasses of watered down Whiskey and told stories for hours. One of my Sisters still has those Cassettes. Gonna have to track them down. My Father was born in 21. He'd seen plenty by the time he left us as well. Keep it in perspective? Not a bad idea.

This particular narrative focuses on the negative, and understandably so. But think about the progress which was made over the same duration. The Wright Brothers flew when you were three years old, and man landed on the moon before your 70th birthday. That's pretty fuckin' astonishing.
