Britain Announces Military Spending Cuts
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 11:28 a.m. ET

LONDON (AP) — Britain will delay a program to upgrade its nuclear defenses, reduce the number of forces it can deploy on combat missions and cut thousands of troops in a sweeping overhaul of the country's military, Prime Minister David Cameron said Tuesday.

Outlining the first defense review since 1998 — intended both to sweep away strategies crafted before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S. and to help clear the country's crippling national debts — Cameron said 17,000 troops, a fleet of fighter jets and an aging aircraft carrier would all be sacrificed.

He told lawmakers that there would be an 8 percent cut to the annual 37 billion pound ($59 billion) defense budget over four years — but insisted Britain's spending on defense would remain above 2 percent of gross domestic product, a level demanded by NATO.

Cameron shared details of the plans with President Barack Obama in a phone call late on Monday, in hopes of assuring the White House that Britain will still be equipped to fight alongside the U.S. on missions overseas.

The British leader insisted there would be no cuts to spending on operations in Afghanistan, pledging better resources for personnel there. But he acknowledged that in the future Britain would be limited to a force of about 30,000 personnel on major operations — smaller than the 45,000-strong force initially sent into Iraq in 2003.

However, he claimed investment in cyber defenses and intelligence gathering would secure Britain's role as a major power.

"Britain has punched above its weight in the world, and we should have no less ambition for our country in the decades to come," Cameron told the House of Commons.

Cameron said a total of 7,000 army troops would be axed, alongside 5,000 personnel from the air force and an equal number from the navy. About 25,000 civilian military staff will also lose their jobs, he confirmed.

The leader also announced that a planned 20 billion pound ($30 billion) program to replace Britain's four nuclear-armed submarines will be delayed until 2016.

It means decisions on the nuclear submarine program — and the hefty bill — will come only after a scheduled 2015 national election.

This represents a force cut of about 19%

All I'll say is it is a f*cking disgrace - the legacy of 15 years of quasi-socialist government by Blair and Brown, their profligate spending and economic mismanagement.

If you see the BBC news today, you will see the spokespeople for their party blaming the Government that was elected in May for the problem!

Hypocrites and liars!

I don't keep up with what's going on in Britain much but they seem to be cutting budgets everywhere. They also announced a 50% cut in housing for the less forunate today too.

Re: Britain Announces Military Spending Cuts

Well it did wind up being a lot better than it could have been

From my reading, some of the main problems seem to be:

2 different pots of money, one for buying new stuff, one for repairing old stuff and they can't really easily take from one to the other, so they'll spend huge amounts of money repairing old stuff that they should just use the money to replace

The Eurofighter mess, is to blame for a huge part of why they have no money for new stuff, Basically thanks to all kinds of backroom deals and crazy contracting etc, the British wound up being on the hook for 200+ hugely expensive fighter planes that now cost about as much as the F22 and are pretty much totally the wrong configuration for what the forces actually need (they were built as air to air only fighters then hugely expensive attempts were made to modify them to be able to do a bit of ground attack). That has sucked up all the money from the New Equipment pot and left them desperate to sell some to the Saudis or anyone who will take them.

Paying staggering sums of money to domestic firms to make overprice piles of garbage in the name of saving domestic jobs (the only jobs that wind up getting helped are the executives)
For example their new Type 45 destroyers, that will run almost US$ 2Billion each when all is said and done, and have a few little guns on them, and then a surface to air missile system that may or may not work (but surface to surface seemed to be forgotten) for that price they could have a new full on carrier bought from the USA.

Not to mention constant infighting by all the branches about who is on what turf.

The list goes on forever, but basically they could have one of the best equipped (even if smaller) armed forces in the world that even the USA would admire if they actually ever get to actually buying good stuff that they need not overpriced garbage that politicians bought to get a couple votes and some kickbacks.

Unfortunately it will probably never happen so the British troops will retain their historic position as some of the best trained troops with the worst support equipment for anything they are actually called to do.

The U.S. and France will be able to use the carrier in time being. They also have two brand larger carriers, that are far more adaptable, being built that should be ready by 2014-2019. The Harrier is an old aircraft, and those carrier are pretty much designed for Harrier use only.
