im starting to punch paper on long range but my ar15 doesnt cut the mustard. we only shoot paper and steel targets, but i am researching 800+ yard guns. im gonna stay in the .308 range. i would like to build another gun, as i did my a.r. i have enough gunsmithing experience to build about anything with a little research, but for my budget i dont know if i can for $1000(- the optics), im thinkin about a new rem 700, any tips,?? what about buildin a single shot? i have an older rem 700 thats AWESOME, but just checkin yalls opinions......?

Re: budget build/buy $1k for LR shooting?

If you have the skills, and want to start with a new 700, I'd suggest you buy the cheapest one you can find. Start with blueprinting the action, and add your barrel of choice. Also, with 800+, look at a 300WM....something that's capable of reaching those distances consistantly

Re: budget build/buy $1k for LR shooting?

if you just have a $1000 budget, why not get a savage? FAR superior to the rem700 action...and for $1000 you can almost get a freaking competition quality f-class gun in 6.5x284!

floating bolt, great trigger, already a superb barrel....kinda hard to argue with it honestly.

but if you wanted something a little smaller than the f-class and it's 30" barrel...then check out the 10 FCP, with the HS Precision
stock. it's a .308 and already has a great stock. i've heard tale that the mcmillian stocked version has a lesser quality stock, even though you'd think the opposite.

If you can find one for $1k or under BUY IT!

..also look into the Savage 12 "target action" rifles. They can be had for a little over 1k. Or if you really want to build your own you can buy the action alone, however I think your gonna really pass up your budget going that route

Take RobertB's advice. When I jumped in I snagged a Savage 10fp with a "budget build" in mind. Needless to say I've since passed up that budget tinkering and changing things. I would have prolly been better suited just buying a Savage 12f/tr..

308 is more than enough to put down targets at 800 meters consistently. If a shooter knows how to shoot and knows his equipment, and really a knowledgable shooter can pick up any decent rifle in 308 and be consistent with man size targets at 800 and beyond. There are thousands of men who have gone thru military and even police sniper schools and self trained shooters that consitantly take down man size targets out to 1200 meters consistently. By the time my sons were 13 they were quite competent with shooting out to 6 and 800 meters with hunting rifles and factory ammo.

The more powerful mag calibers that fly flatter definately help the novice to shoot like a pro. But anyone not just pro's consistently take targets at 800M with 308's.

If you want a rifle you can brag about what you put into it, blue print it and do all the high brow tricks when building your rifle. If you want a rifle that is a nice consitent shooter out to 800M's, pay attention and have some patience and find yourself a brand name action with a good barrel on it for a great deal. Do the same with a stock, doesnt have to be a $700 stock, float it and bed it if you can, trigger job it put an 8x scope on it and find some factory ammo it likes and get after it. Hell, coat it with high heat BBQ paint and bake it on! LOL! Ive seen a hell of a lot done with $1000 and we/US military shooters were taking 800M targets with less money than a $1000 for freakin decades! But...most importantly....learn HOW to shoot and understand LR shooting and you dont need some high polutiant muckity muck 3-$5000 rifle to smack LR targets! LOL!

Now... all that being said I still have a taste for nice firearms! LOL! But Ive got rifles Id put my life on that can be bought for $600 that will shoot as well as the high browers. Good luck on your build and have a good time. Shooting a rifle you built is a hell of a good time, especially when you know how to shoot LR.

Re: budget build/buy $1k for LR shooting?

I agree with the above statement. I would like to ad this. For not much more than $1k you can lurk around the for sale section and come away with some really nice rifles. It may not be blueprinted but you can find a nice R700 with a good quality barrel with low round count. Then you can practice your DIY without needing to chamber/thread and all that stuff.

Re: budget build/buy $1k for LR shooting?

thanks guys, im sure this topic was discussed time an time again, but i never seen much on it. i am gonna start with a rem700, but i will look into the savage, i already have a 93r17, .17hmr, and love that gun. im do strongly agree with save and get what you want, thats how i did my a.r.,

but i agree with the statement that experience and know-how can trump the equipment in MANY instances. i have seen many superior shots come from inferior guns. i love to stretch the limits of my equipment, maybe i should start lookin into pushing the limits of what i have...... (maybe a new post all together)....

thanks for the .02
