Any recommendations I should be considering besides Vortex and Leupold?

This will be for a new shooter learning the basics. Mounted on an R700 PSS .308. Possibly swapping it onto a .308 AR-10 from time to time. Distances under 1k and mostly under 600.

Would like FFP MIL/MIL. No need for illumination. Minimum mag around 4x and maximum 15-20x.

Budget $1k +/- $100 or so

Current recommendations are:
Viper PST Gen II 3-15x44 First Focal Plane Riflescope - EBR-2C Reticle (MRAD) and Leupold Mark 4HD 4.5-18x52 (34mm) M5C3 , though the Leupold is probably pushing his budget a bit.

Anything else I should be considering?

I've run a Viper 3-15 on my deer Rem 700 .308 now for 6-7 years, I believe. Its been very suitable for that purpose and Vortex CS is bullet proof.

With that said, I have never looked thru a Mk 4HD. I do have a Mk 5 5-25 that is a very nice scope...not as nice as the ZCO I bought from Richard at CS Tactical (love that scope) but far less expensive.

Perhaps you can find a shop to look thru these scopes and see for yourself though what you can do indoors in a story may not be totally indicative of in the field.

LRHS/LRHS2 is one that I really have been impressed with in that category. Well built, glass is plenty good, and all of mine have been far more trouble free than the Leupold and Vortex scopes I've owned. I've not personally owned the two models you are considering, but between my friends and I we have all had various problems various Vortex and Leupold scopes that have mostly gone away with switching to LRHS/LRTS, SWFA, NF, and a few others. The SWFA 3-15 would be another to consider, or the 3-9 if the 600 and in is a higher priority than 1k and a more compact scope is a priority.

Don't forget solid mounting!
