I am in the middle of building my new ALL purpose rife, going to be a beautiful 30-.06 Rem 700. Going to be used for putting down paper, game, zombies etc. I am having a hard time deciding on a scope though. I am in the military, so not much of a budget. Wondering what ya'll think. I need a good, clear, durable (looking a some multi-day trips), decently priced scope. Thanks guys.

Re: Building a nail driver

Yes you should read stickies BUT the information on that sticky is opinionated. First before recommending a scope I think it is important I ask what experience you have with scopes? Example are use to variable magnification or fixed power? What is your knowledge of how scopes function and so on because if you don't have a back ground in optics it might not be advantageous to purchase a scope with alot of features. If you rather feel free to PM me.

Opinions on an internet forum....... you don't say..........

Re: Building a nail driver

Take a look at the Vortex site. The Viper PST series may interest you. If you see something you may like email them and ask about their mil/leo discount program.

Also if you pay attention to the classifieds there will be some NF scopes pop up that are not to far out of your range.

Re: Building a nail driver

My recommendation is this: After reading these suggestions, call a few of the site sponsors. I have dealt with Liberty Optics. Scott knows his gear and his optics. He is not the only vendor here, but that is my own personal experience. I can offer no conjecture as to other dealers.

Also, don't rule out the For Sale section. I nabbed a screaming deal on a NF scope for just a few hundred over what you are looking at spending.

I also own a few others including Sightron. If I was to stay UNDER $1000, I would have a serious look at their Big Sky line and the SIII line.

Re: Building a nail driver

If you watch out on the for sale forums, you can get a good deal on a really good scope for $1K. I recently sold a no frills Nightforce 2.5-10X32 for just under $1K. If a tough scope with good glass is what you're after, you can find a 2.5-10X32 Nightforce. At that price, it likely won't have zero stops, but it will be a Nightforce none the less.

Re: Building a nail driver

If you are in the military, call Sylvia at Schmidt and Bender and get a quality scope. PM2 4-16 non illuminated with your choice of reticle. I prefer the horus H58. You might be able to get one for around $2200 thats a guess. I have been wrong before.
I know it's out of your proposed budget, but if you want unfailing reliability, great glass, and something to drive tacks with, suck it up and wait a bit. Go sell blood, or even do gay porn. It's just a job, lots of people hate their jobs, but if it get you a Quality scope the first time it might be worth it.
I personally wouldn't do gay porn for a 4-16 S & B, but I might take it into consideration for a 5-25!
Point being, we can make do with lower quality equipment, but if you are building the best "a tack driver" get the best.
