Gunsmithing building of a mil surplus mauser action

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

I think they can be as accurate as anything else. I'm also building one, but it's a commercial action, not Mil. Do some google searches and I think you'll see they're still highly respected world wide.

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

I guess it depends on your definition of "great". Typically, military surplus Mauser actions are not the way to go for a high end build due to shoddy tolerances and a huge slab of steel cut out of the action for clip loading. If you have a Mauser that you want to butcher I wouldn't advise against it, but I also wouldn't spend the money on a Mauser hoping that it is going to be a high end piece, either.

A decent Czech VZ24 is going to set you back 200 bucks and you're going to toss everything but the action. You can find Savage actions for the same money and have more aftermarket parts, and arguably a more versatile rifle.

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

i would think (keep in mind i have 0 experiance with any build) the truing process would take extra machine hours due to the massive action and negate any savings over a savage or ? action

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

the only reason i am building one is becuase the rifle is from my grandfather and is pitted, etc and i don't want to shit can the gun for memory purposes i know it won't be as accurate as a r700 or anything but as long as it shoots straight, it will be a fine hunting gun, it won't win matches but still fun.

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

As long as your expectations aren't a benchrest rifle, these actions can make a very nice hunting rifle. Have a qualified smith check out the acton to make sure it is safe to use. Pick a caliber suited for the action. Expect to pay a little more to get the cosmetics, such as the pitting taken care of. Currently I am going through the gunsmithing course at Yavapai College and have a Turkish Mauser that I am rebuilding. It will be rebarreled to a #4 contour fluted barrel chambered in .257 Roberts. This rifle will be given to my 11yr old daughter as a comemmerative of her first deer killed this year.

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

I have been sporterizing Mausers for 44 years, and really seriously for the last 10 years.

Don't do it if you just want a rifle.

Today I am rebuilding a vertical milling machine that is for Mausers.
You don't want the grief or space consumption.

If you think most commercial rifles are crap, then buy a new Kimber rifle, or a customized Win M70 pre 64.
They have the most important Mauser advantages.

Sporterizing Mausers is foolish from the time and money point of view. You have to want to do it as an end in itself. It is a hobby and an obsession.

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

thanks for the help folks. im in the process of trying to find a good action for a build but was told a mauser would work and i have one. i think ill just wait to find a good 70-700-savage

Re: building of a mil surplus mauser action

My good bud has 2 builds on Mausers... he would LOVE to get the $ back out of them and start with Stevens 200 actions. Bot shoot decent, but not great... and the $ that went into them is crazy.
