My brother-in-law has a Mark V action he said I could have. Is this action worth building off of. Never really heard of anyone doing this and it seems like with all the lugs, smithing cost would outweight the free action. Not to mention aftermarket parts seem pretty scarce.

Your thoughts?

Re: Building off of a Weatherby Action???

I would build off a mark V action in a hartbeat. They are very well made and strong. They have some desirable features about them like the 60 degree bolt lift and large bolt body that runs very smooth. The only problems you may run into would be options for bottom metal if you plan on running a DBM and you may have to make a pic rail to fit it which would be no prob. You option on stocks should be ok, Mcmillan inlets for the MKV but it may take some asking to get them to do up one of their "A" series if that is what you want. But hell yes that would be a cool build if you could make it work. I would just figure out the parts first.

I'm building a 338 Lapua right now with a Mark V action and Brux barrel. FYI I sent Kyle @ XLR a mark V action so he could build the pattern for his Evolution chassis so I know he will be offering the stocks as soon as he's done with mine.

Re: Building off of a Weatherby Action???

I built me long-range rifle off a mkv action. I love it for all the reason mentioned above:
60 degree bolt throw
Action is smooth as silk
Strong as hell
And a BIG plus I had it already!

The cons around the build, everything seems to cost just a little bit more when dealing with weatherby's, the 20 moa base was more expensive, Smithing work a little more, and not as many choices. Not saying you can not find what your looking for just may cost a little.

With that said, if you have one then I would build off it, but if you were going to go purchase a donor I would go a different route! Custom actions cost as much as donor mkv rifles. If I was building a true tactical type gun I would go a different route as well, for a long range big bore or a hunting gun I think they are a great choice.

But damn I still love mine!
