in .308. I switched to 175 smk's for a few reasons and they are quite a bit (.055 or so) shorter than the 178 amax. I found a great load with the amax just touching the lands, but in my CTR this is some crazy long 2.900 coal or something like that. The amax had about .3 in the case, but to get the SMK to touch the lands i can only get about .2 of the bearing surface in there. I know there is alot of data where guys are shooting .308 at 2.800 or shorter with great results, but i like to be at the lands for testing and then walk it back once i find a node.
I read a few places where a good rule of thumb is to have the diameter of the bullet seated, but that would put me somewhere like .09 off the lands in my gun. I want to try and seat them long, but am i going to run into any issues with less bearing surface being held by the case?
