This is my first AR and a decent platform the way it sets from what I have seen. I have have read tons of threads on several sites about upgrades and I'm not sure what would be the best combo for my application. It is bone stock other than a Nikon 3x9-40mm scope and a grip that the guy before me put on it. What I want this gun to be is a hunting gun that has a very consistent close group (without throwing the shooter in the equation) and have the ability to do so out to 500 yards. As far as price I haven't looked at much other than scopes, so let's say 1500 as a starting point of price, but I'm flexible on that.

I don't see why this gun couldn't reach your goals as-is. I'd advise that you use it for a while before throwing a bunch of add-ons on there unless you wanted to put better glass. (of the lesser scopes, Nikon is near the top though IMO) I've added several things on ARs in the past and most of them were a waste of time, money and ammo. My guns are pretty basic nowdays other than optics for my aged eyesight.
This all depends on your level of acceptable accuracy/performance of course.
Throw that thing on a bench/sandbags and put some GOOD AMMO through it and I bet you'll be surprised with accuracy. IME the biggest accuracy improvements are finding ammo it likes and a good smooth crisp trigger.

On one of my Rem 700s, I can do pretty well with a cheap mil-dot Buckmasters out to 600 yards on 8"x8" plates.

Does the gun itself have the ability to hold close groups at 500yds? If not, a barrel upgrade would be one of my first purchases.

I would do things in this order.

Drop in a new trigger. The trigger is horrible unless you have put many rounds down range on an AR. Timney makes a decent drop in that u can put in yourself.

Shoot many rounds to see what the accuracy is like. The Nikon is a good scope for under 500 yards id spend your money on bullets for right now.

Once you have done those I would reevaluate based on how the rifle is performing accuracy wise

Thanks for the input. I planned on a trigger upgrade first, then a barrel. From what I have read the factory barrel is ok but to have the best results you need to upgraded the barrel. I'm not sure what twist I would get just going to have to call and talk with someone. My usually load will be Remington core lokt and the fmj 150 grain.
