Bustin' rust. Any help or tips?

[Mike Shoots Stuff]

I just got back from the Philippines and aquired some M14 magazines. They haven't seen much care. I'm bustin' rust and scubbing pretty hard here. Anyone have some tips to get this rust out? The surface stuff came off pretty easy but I haven't had to deal with rust this bad.

Naval Jelly? Its available in most hardware stores

Find some fine/coarse quartz beach sand to use as an abrasive with a solvent of some kind.

Thanks for the tips. I have used sand before to get carbon off before, I don't know why I didn't think about that.

I just use a brass brush and some CLP.

Evapo-rust works well then just cold blue them or paint them to your requirements

ospho, i think it is the same stuff as naval jelly, sold at auto parts stores, its a liquid instead of a paste like naval jelly, disolved rust on contact...

Birchwood caseys blue and rust remover will take it off like magic... but it might also remove parkarizing. I don't know for sure. I know it will take blueing right off.

The active ingredient in most rust removers is Phosphoric acid. Its alot cheaper to buy than a brand name and works just as well. Turns the iron oxide into ferric phosphate which is much more durable and can act as a finish.

If your going to cold blue them try blackfast cold bluing it's really good and leaves a really good finish bit pricey if your only doing 3 mags but if you have a few guns that need bluing it's quite cost effective

I may be a little off-base on this, but since his screen name is a MOS and he lists his location as a Marine Corps Base, I am pretty sure he is OK with having a military magazine to feed a military weapon in his possession.

Just guessing since I have tromped through that neck of the woods will machine guns, magazines and high explosive in the past.

Now taking them off-base in a recreational capacity may have some issues, the the actual possession of them on a federal installation isn't an issue.

I'm well aware of 29 palms location is. Though I didn't get the chance to tromp thur the desert of 29 palms, cause I got a medical out of the Corps in 90.

It sounds like the magazines might be for pesonal use and if not then my apologies. If they are for personal use being in the military is not an exception to the law.

Even though nobody has been convicted of importing magazines into California doesn't mean it won't happen.

They're more just to have. Of course I would not be caught dead at a public range with them. I am going to bring them to Afghanistan next year though because I know there are M14s that stay in country there and get turned over to ongoing units and usualy magazines are in short supply.

I may have made one mistake though. I packed them in a storage trunk and sent it to a buddies place to pick them up when I get back... we'll see how that goes. I have flown into California from Virginia with high capacity 5.56 and 7.62 magazines when I was changing duty stations as well, nothing happened. But I do not intend to break the law.

On a side note, I like the YT channel LoneWolf!

Yup, the steel wool will take it off...along with the finish...but you'll need to recoat anyway.
