Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

Re: Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

Hey all,

I decided to buy an AW. I am buying the pre owned one in the FS forum. I figure that I have less to lose that way, if I decide to go with a TRG later on, I can cash up the AW.

I am buying it with the attached S&B PMII, 4-16x50.

Thanks for all the input, you were all very helpful! Might end up with a TRG as well at some point in future.

No then you blaim the AI and buy a TRG

Just kiddin I´m sure you will be happy with it as long as you like the design of the AI.

Damn this thread...

I started reading and following from the first day. That of course started me thinking about "maybe I should just get an AI", which of course ended up with me ordering an AE MkII from Jonathan at SRT today.

Right after I got off the phone I headed to the range with a friend, my Rem 700 5R was shooting better today than it ever has (I think it knows there is a new rifle headed to our house).

Thanks to bm11 for posting the first question about AI or a Sako, all the people who added great comments and feedback and Jonathan for taking my money today.

Incorrect. The Sako cannot be loaded from the port and neither can the AE. The AW is the only one because it has a true double stack mag. The Sako has a double stack, single feed and you cannot just push the cartridge straight down into the magazine. You must load it like most and push down on the follower with the rear of the cartridge and slide it back. As a result, the action and barrel tend to get in the way if trying to load through the port. Answer is most definitely NO!

8up,

Now that I reread it, it is unclear what he is asking. If he is asking if you can reload the magazine from the port, my answer above stands. If he is asking if you can just toss a round in the action and chamber it...that answer is yes as you stated. I believe it is probably the former, but I can see where you were coming from.

Re: Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

I have a TRG-42 Lapua and my buddy has an AIAW 308. Both are fudging amazing weapons. I prefer the feel of the Sako and the trigger is an easy win on the TRG. The AI trigger isn't bad at all. It is awesome, but the TRG trigger is just that much more...

Both rifles are solid. If I wanted the quick change barrel ability I'd go with an AW. I'd likely never buy an AE if I went with an AI. The cost difference in the grand scheme of things is nothing when you consider what you'll spend on ammo and training.

As far as looks, the Sako is a better looking rifle, but at the gun club, people ask what it is. They know what the AW is and it gets all the ooohhs and aaahhs.

The sako bipod is the best IMO. It is just awesome. The atlas is nice as well on my buddy's AIAW, but I'm in love with the Sako bipod.

Re: Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

I am going to meet up with JBell today, and I'll shoot his TRG-22 side by side with my new AW. Report to follow!

Re: Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

So, went to the range today, and shot my AIAW and JBell's TRG-22.

I loved them both! I am definely not dissapointed I went with the AI. I felt very comforable with it, and did not find the trigger to be inferior to the TRG's. Both rifles shot great, both felt very high quality, and I wouldn't have been the least bit dissapointed if I had bought the TRG instead.

I did shoot the TRG a tiny bit better, but I was feeding it handloads that it specifically likes, vs factory ammunition in my AI.

Well, a little update for you guys- I have put over 2000 rounds through the AW, and it was definitely the right choice. I absolutely love this rifle. It is the ONE rifle that is safe in my safe.

BUT, I had a bad hankering for a TRG, and I bought one those too the other day, haha!

And it was the right choice too!

The AW is a 26" 1.5 configuration .308. I also have a 6.5x47 GAP built Satern barrel for it. It is setup with an Atlas V8, my preferred bipod for this rifle.

The TRG is a 20" folder with the phosphate finish, the Sako brake, Sako bipod, a Warn 20 moa base and Badger rings holding on a Hensoldt 4-16x56 ff. The bipod is splitting time between the two rifles while my bank account recoups from the TRG purchase.

Re: Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

If you get an AI do yourself a favor save the money for a scope and get an AE mkII,I really have no idea why anyone would buy an AW other than the 338 or the 300.unless you plan on running over it with a steamroller then i might get the AW.The first time i shot my AE MK1 i shot a 5 shot group at 100 .5 or less moa and a 3 shot at 200 with all rounds touching.that was done off the AI bipod with fiocchi ammo topped with 175 smks.

Re: Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

At my rifle club guys shoot both AIAW's & TRG 22's. I haven't seen any noticiable difference between the two. It seems they choose the one that fits them best. You can't go wrong with either one. I prefer the TRG 22. The stock seems to fit me better.

That's a good decision.

Bought my AW with PMII 6 years ago - the only rifle I have NEVER had any "if only..." thought about.

Puts a smile on my face everytime I shoot it - shoots way better than I can - keeps me honest. I love it!

I'm sure you will too.

Congrats!
