"Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Yesterday was a very good time. Several new shooters showed up and everyone did well. The weather was not that bad and there was no shortage of laughter or good times..as always. I don't think I ever really noticed the cold at all. The short course is a great time and very challenging. There was just enough wind to make you earn some hits. It is perfect for .223's AR's or .308's
We need to have a short course match, two classes..AR class/5.56mm and bolt rifle. As I said yesterday, matches are great but using these shoot dates for JUST training and practice are priceless. That's what I did and I had a grat time doing it. NEVER under estimate the AR/5.56 out o 600 yards..or 800..lol.

Thanks again for the great time guys!

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

I like the AR 5.56 match idea. Miss shooting with you guys; will try to make it to the next shoot. Tom, time to talk about a suppressor next time I'm down.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Wow! What an awesome place. It was a privilege getting to shoot on such beautiful terrain. It was also a pleasure meeting a great bunch of guys and thanks for making a noob feel very comfortable. I can’t wait to shoot there again.

I'm excited about an AR 5.56 match too. Should be a good time with my newest project that I have in the works.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

This course could easily be one of the best training courses around for SLOW fire AR15 shooters. Distance and just enough wind to make it a challenge or just REAL world shooting scenarios. Great for the predator hunter to learn what works and and how to improve upon it, or the spotter in a two man sniper team. Mid range is where it's at guys for these weapons. Here's your chance to learn how to use them.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Gentlemen, that looks entirely too cold for us southern boys. The shooting was good, I heard lots of tink on the video, but I b'lieve I'd like to wait until ya'll have some sunshine up there.

It was 70 degrees here today. Although it was raining and the range had a shotgun match taking over the 600 area, and I couldn't make it to the ranch to shoot there...... it still was warmer than that!

can I come shoot up there later this spring???

I really like this idea. I've been working with my 20" AR as a semi-precision setup for about a year and have been steadily pushing the distances that I previously thought were unobtainable.

Looking forward to having more practice and practical application on the Short Course, please keep us updated on the developments to this Tom.

I'm disappointed I couldn't make this shoot, it looks like it was a fantastic time, yet again.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Sir,

Your more than welcome to come shoot with us. There are few guys from Texas who want to come and shoot the "Intimidator".
Maybe you guys can put together a car pool or arrange a flight into Columbus, Akron/Canton airport then rent a van from there. We would be glad to have you guys come shoot with us. If you need anymore info please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

I've made the trip from Louisana and it is well worth it. Keep looking into the best time you think and you might can line up differnt shoots for the same time your up there. Short and long maybe. Good luck

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Josh,

Our next match date will be posted tonite for Febuary.
It will be a short course/Intimidator combo. With the right load and scope an AR15 5.56mm will shoot out to 1000 yards. Even the 55gr. bullets will go 800 easy. You may be using a larger cartridge and that's even better. But for the shooter who only runs a .223/5.56 this is a great way to learn your limitations. Looking forwarded to seeing you soon. Sorry I didn't get to hook up with ya' at SHOT I was covered up! I had a great time though.
Next year I see a TVP party at SHOT...big time.

Tom

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Hi Tom-

I've done some stretching with the AR, Francis and I got it to hit at almost 1300 with the 75 Amax but it was very tough with about 1/4 of the flight being subsonic. The wind was eating me up...

I'll bring my AR with some 75's in it when I'm out, hopefully I can make that Feb. shoot.

Not a big deal on SHOT, I had never been there before and thought I might actually get to walk around the show while splitting duties at my buddy's booth... that was a poor assumption. LOL.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Big thanks to swoodz for the pics.
Would it be ok if the ar shoot was just based on .556/.223 brass?
Working on something for dogs now.
I'll give my bolt gun to whoever needs it.
My ammo too. 44 grns and 168 A-Max.
Safe and consistant load.
More stable with temp swings.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Thanks Tom, I'll be up sometime soon to shoot with ya'll. Looks like a great time to be had by all.

Like wise, call me when you are in TX, we have some steel and some challenging wind down here too.

What is the longest distance for your Feb shoot? I've got a short 308 I've been playing with a lot lately. I know about where it runs outa gas and needs more barrel or another rifle.......

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Station one on the long course should give damn near a mile for the bonus.

Get 550. 950. 1165. 875 done in time.
10 point bonous for long one.

Guy's are always up to stretch farther.
Ribbon or rock @ 2400 seems to be the best.
.260 and up.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Mikee Booshay,

We will shoot out to 1165 on the combo course, further if you want..out to 1650 from position one. If you need a new barrel we've been doing alot of .260's and I have several barrels sitting here ready to chamber. Our .260 rem. rigs will shoot out to a mile easily with great accuracy. If want another .308 we can fix you up. We have all your needs at TVP, including one heck of a fun time shooting. Lots of entertainment...so I hear.

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

got the rifles covered thanks! Always have plenty and working on more. Need another safe... again!

I saw ya'll talking about the short course and AR's, I have one I like alot out to 800, but even with 175's, it is not so hot with any wind after 800. Hence the question about range.

Beyond that I am using the 300WM and just finished a 243 8 twist. Working on a 6.5CM in an AR10 also, the bolt 6.5 CM is good past 1000.

Our place here has steel out to a mile, adding another pad up higher to go 2250 later this spring. Out in the TX hillcountry, lots of canyons, wind and tricky reads. Like to visit with you guys and see how you do it there.

And Tom, I have found that whether playing ball, golf or shooting, doing it with folks better than yourself, elevates your game. I'd like to come learn from ya'll, the place and reputation speaks for itself.

A little view from a part of our range:

Re: "Cabin Fever Shoot" Thunder Valley Precision, Ohio

Never been to Texas but I would love to make the trip. Going to get back with a fella from Arizona to shoot there sometime this year. Looks like a great realistic place to shoot you got there. Any place to stay near by? Are you planning any shoots anytime soon? If you make it up we have a new course of fire, 1760, 2000 and 2200 yards for the extreme stuff. 20 targets all over 1000 yards!
Don't know if we are better but we love to share what we know with others and build on each others knowledge and skill levels. I learn something every year, some times several things.
That's why this game never gets boring to me. I compare it to hunting big whitetails..sure I've killed some nice 160+ class deer, but it's what you learn from each and every hunt that makes you better when the moment of truth finally arrives on the big one. Long range shooting is an art. The more artists you meet the better painter you become.
I would love to see the Texas hill country. Give me a shout some time on the number below and maybe we can plan something out this summer. A friend and business associate of mine David Whitson of Shark Suppressors will be coming a few times this year, he is from Plano TX. maybe you can hook up with him and come on out.
