I have a La Rue OBR 7.62 w/18" barrel on order and I'm looking to to purchase my first can. Prefer a threaded mount. Was looking at AAC but after reviewing several threads, there are some pretty nice cans avail, GemTech Sandstorm and Thunder Beast 30p-1 to name a couple. I don't want to spend good money on a can not designed for an AR platform. I don't plan on clip dumps but could run a round every 3 secs. Are any of the above mentioned vendors NOT recommended for an AR platform? A noob in the can world looking for advice.

Re: Can selection for an AR platform

You can shoot one round every 3 seconds, no problem. But you can't do that forever (mag after mag after mag etc). For example, when you look at military weapons system that are used in "high" rate of fire applications, their "sustained" rate is much lower than you would think. Eventually you have to stop putting heat into the system and let it cool down.

hope this helps

Re: Can selection for an AR platform

The only thing to be wary of with thread mounted suppressors on semi-automatic rifles, is that they can loosen while you are firing.

Most market thread mount suppressors come with no means of tightening them except by hand without tools. Failure to achieve reasonable mounting torque makes the suppressors more likely to break loose during semi-automatic fire.

Re: Can selection for an AR platform

I used to be a 30 can on (only) bolt gun user, with not much experience with the semis. Thread mounts were just fine for that, assuming enough torque to solidly mount suppressor to shoulder.
Now, having shot a bit of (both semi and full) auto with both thread and QD cans, I only recommend QD to customers due to the likelihood of a thread mount can backing off during fire. I have had several thread mount cans come loose after just 2 shots on two different 10" guns, one in 223/556 and one in 300 blk.
Get QD for, at a minimum, peace of mind. But, I think it is great insurance, too. And you can get several mounts that have built in brakes, too, for when you have the can off.

Yeah. What he said.
I only have experience with YHM, a 7.62 titanium QD. I can buy adapters for all my ARs, both 762 and 556, and swap from gun to gun very easily. The titanium weight savings is worth the extra money and it's rated by YHM for limited full auto. Very little POI shift which is repeatable. The QD system is dirt simple and reliable-in my experience will not back off even after a couple hundred rounds of 556.
