My brother in Law (B-I-L) [VNam 1967] finally shelled out nearly a Grand for his 1st safe: Cannon Patriot P40. Has had it home for nearly 3 weeks. Electric Keypad... after dozens of attempts, new batteries, a call to the Customer Service (CS)which was a total freaking waste of his time and he was bascially told to FUCK OFF .... STILL CAN NOT GET THE ELECTRONIC KEYPAD TO WORK...

Any POLITE ) suggestions I can pass on to Cannon or helpful hints for my B-I-L...

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

I can think of at least one for Cannon but it wouldn't be considered "polite".
Your bil might want to call a local locksmith.
Personally I would just return it. If the keypad won't work the thing is worthless.

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

So far...I called Cannon. Explained what happend and she put me in contact w/Tim.

Tim asked for his p# I gave it. Tim call back about 10 min later and asking for a correction on number I gave him mobile(again) and a home number...

Tim seemed kinda PISSED about my characterization that B-I-L was told to FUCK OFF****...I don't care how polite words are the bottom line was he was told to fuck off...

Will keep ya informed how Cannon performs...

almost going on a month and the safe will <span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> work...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

------------------------------------

*****kinda reminds me of a nice way to call someone a bastard:

A guy was getting ready to tee off on the first hole when a second golfer
approached and asked if he could join him The first said that he usually
played alone, but agreed to the twosome.

They were even after the first few holes. The second guy said, "We're about
evenly matched, how about playing for five bucks a hole?" The first guy said
that he wasn't much for betting, but agreed to the terms.

The second guy won the remaining sixteen holes with ease.

As they were walking off number eighteen, the second guy was busy counting
his $80.00. He confessed that he was the pro at a neighboring course and
liked to pick on suckers. The first fellow revealed that he was the Parish
Priest.

The pro was flustered and apologetic, offering to return the money. The
Priest said, "You won fair and square and I was foolish to bet with you. You
keep your winnings."

The pro said, "Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?"

The Priest said, "Well, you could come to Mass on Sunday and make a
donation. And, if you want to bring your mother and father along, I'll marry
them."

Not saying all cannons are great or all cannons are crap but mine has done its job so far. Will it keep someone out? i hope. I have been happy with it so far.

According to their website, Cannon offers a lifetime 100% warranty, I'd be telling them to put it into effect. http://www.cannonsafe.com/warranty.html 3 weeks is more than enough time for them to have taken care of this, have a tech out to his house or have had the safe picked up to ship back to the factory. Has it not worked since day one I take it? Does he know if the keypad is completely broke or maybe it has been set for an incorrect code? Maybe he could ask Cannon if there is some sort of default combination he could try if the combo he's using is incorrect. A safe isn't something that you'd be going into everyday, so when the batteries die on it you won't know until you need it...I don't like that idea and that's what keeps me from warming up to the keypads.

On another note, my dad had a big Fort Knox safe at the house with a plain old round dial and key lock to lock the dial if you want to do that as well. I have been shopping for a safe so I don't have to leave most of my guns at my dads house and decided on a Fort Knox safe based on good past experience with them. The local shop that sells them is really pushing hard for the electric keypad and I just don't trust the things so we're kind of at a mexican standoff. I was ready to order but he keeps telling me I wouldn't be happy with the round dial........ Several people have confirmed my suspicions that the keypad is convenient and nice to have when they work, but like anything electronic when it breaks it aint worth a shit.

I've got a keypad, and would much prefer a regular dial. Go with the dial, don't let them talk you into the electronic stuff.

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

I have a Cannon safe with the combination dial. It's worked flawlessly for the last eight years and I have zero complaints about the safe in general.

This reconfirms my personal requirement of a safe to only have a mechanical dial. Hopefully they will get on the ball with his problems, but it is disappointing he's having so many difficulties with them.

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

I was looking at a Canon for a while, but ended up splurging and getting a Summit. I was warned about buying a Canon by a local locksmith because apparently they won't stand by their warranty in Alaska. He had to go cut a Canon open when the electronic lock failed because Canon told the owner that he had to ship it back to them if he wanted it opened.

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

You can have problems with basic combo safes too. I have a 16 gun Treadlok that's 30 years old and the combination lock froze tight.

Scary part is a carbide hole saw let me open it in under 10 minutes. Buy quality!

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

Tim at CAnnon did not call at the time he picked at 9am. Buyer was waiting for call: CAnnon called around 11 am CST.

Tried everything. Safe does not respond: will not open. Tim asked buyer to return it to the store: Fremont back to Omaha!!!

Cannon sending a local tech guy to fix safe....shipping replacement parts over night...

Saga continues...

Prolly could solved all this by opening the safe at location where it was purchased.... :O)

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

Being a locksmith has really re-affirmed that electronic safe locks fail often!! We keep a few key pads in stock for the major brands if that tells you much. 95% of safe lock failures are the electronic ones. A dial type combo will normally give some warning that it has problems vs the elect. I have a dial on my personal gun safe fwiw. Bill

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

AS of March 7th here is the latest on Customer Service from CANNON email from B-I-law:

"NO the locksmith hasn't called yet." .... safe still does not work going on a month.

Re: Cannon Safes.any 1 w/experience w/this POS

Personally i like the big round wheel and the key lock. Put it this way, ease of convience with rappid breakdowns/battery life, OR, strong relieble and dependable and less electronic breakdowns. This comming from a electronis tech. I try to purchase my trucks with as little electronics as possible.
