I recently saw an article that addressed a product that may provide a solution to the short barrel life dilemma of the aforementioned (overbore) cartridges. In the January issue of Shooting Times magazine a carbon fiber wrapped barrel was discussed. While the process shaved some weight off the barrel, what really caught my eye was the increase in barrel life. In the article the barrel life of several .300 Win Mag rifles was extended from approx 1400 rounds to over 4600 rounds. 4600 rounds.

Apparently the carbon fiber wrap allows the heat to disperse at a much higher rate than normal. The barrels are turned down from standard barrels and then covered with the composite fibers. A 308 rifle with one of these barrels was tested for accuracy using factory loads. 5 round, 100 yard group sizes with the 308 were in the .6xx” region. The barrels are produced by Advanced Barrel Systems and the cost is about $600.

This seems like just the ticket for overbore cartridges like the 6-284 or 300 Ultra Mag.

I am curious if anyone has used these barrels, and how well they worked.

Thanks

Dirk

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

There is a lot already posted about the ABS carbon barrels if you do a search. I think the cost is closer to 900 than 600. I like the idea of a light weight match barrel though.

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

No it really doesnt come apart at all. You could have problems with seperation for the barrel steel but most companys have solved that problem. Lets say you froze the barrel then shot it a bunch the wrap might come loose. Either way it is tough stuff.

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

don't believe much of what you read in them general publications for the great un-washed.....yes the heat goes away very quick in Carbon wrapped barrels....a thermal imaging camera and/or a barrel handshake right after a 5 or 6 round string will confirm the dissipation.....but that will not tell you how much you just blow-torched the throat and eroded the lands.....savvy the hawkeye

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

what's the diff???? if your going to "tourch the lands and throat" won't it happen either way??

Just cant see a .308 eroding the lands/throat even with a 10 shot string?

yes/no........

I'd like one but for the price i can have two, with the plumbing done.

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

Nomally I wouldn't blast someone on here but we sent mike from ABS a barrel to be done over a year ago and still have not recieved nor recovered it. I've called countless times and stopped getting any kind of response months ago.
The ones we have done shot well all things considered but none could handle any kind of round count to speak of.

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

Thanks for all of the responses and info.

Probably wont be doing it any time soon.

Re: Carbon fiber barrels

I have a Majestic arms 17M2 barrel for a 10/22 that is a Lothar Walther steel barrel inside an Aluminum bull barrel. It is fat and light.
link to adds for Majestic arms barrels

Aluminum:
Lower density than steel
Higher specific heat than steel
Higher thermal conductivity than steel

My experience when shooting rapid fire is that I get 3 holes touching, and then flyers.
