My wife and I wish to get involved in sending care packages to our troops in Afghanistan and looking for suggestions for reputable organizations. We would be willing to package and ship needed goods or donate funds to pay for shipping costs.

I did the usual search on the net and found several organizations, but I'm looking for suggestions from those who were on the receiving end.

Watching the Firebase Restrepo documentary prompted this.

Thanks in advance,

Wade

Re: Care packages suggestions

Biker type magazines
Gun magazines
Freshy laundered boot socks(look for the military issue types)
Copenhagen(American market cardboard/tin lid can is HIGHLY PRIZED)
Beef Jerky, any flavor
Trail Mix
Dried Fruit mixes
Cookies
Candy
Cards that say,"Thank You for serving, we truly appreciate it"(these bring the 'ceiling dust')
Cigars
Matches
Cigarettes(some FOBs have none due to NO PX so everything is well received)
Coffee, Coffee pot, Coffee filters(the whole kit, it will see heavy use)
Raman
Hot cocoa and other warming or cooling/hydration beverage packets

Those should give you a good start

Re: Care packages suggestions

Some magazines that discuse what is going on back home are always nice since we tend to not get very much info.
Stuff, Maxims are nice for the boys.

Re: Care packages suggestions

I have the lists what the troops prefer but since I don't know of anyone serving I'm more interested in recommendations of the various organizations available.

Thanks in advance,

Wade

Re: Care packages suggestions

Toilet paper and cheese/peanut butter filled snack crackers were what I was asked for. I used snack-sized slim jims as filler to round out the box. I imagine that some sort of news from back home is always good, too. I sent my son the sports pages when he was in basic and they ate it up.
