Gunsmithing Carving/inletting wood stocks from scratch?

Re: Carving/inletting wood stocks from scratch?

Hi Forest.
Though I have never carved a stock, I knew a gun maker "Mike Tierney of Custom Rifles" here in the UK who did just about everything by hand.

I spent many hours watching him, start of with a walnut blank and then only using hand tools, he would turn it into a work function and beauty.

when he was inletting the barreled action everything was done with gouges and scrapers and a soot lamp.

Sadly Mike passed away a few years ago and with him all of the skills he posessed.

It is a shame he never had an apprentice.

Like how big of a size of a blank? I thought about tracing my original plain marlin xl7 stock on the the wood and then editing that original drawing from there and making the cheekpiece to my excact length, foregrip how i want.. Then cutting that out with a skillsaw or router or something? Any ideas?

There are a lot of books on this subject out there. Suggest that you check them out.

I've built a few black powder rifles and there is no way I am going to even try inletting a barrel channel on one of them without power tools. If you can actually do it with gouges and chisels, good for you. I prefer not to waste 2 days or more on a job that should take 10 minutes.

Your best bet would be to have a stock "smith" inlet the stock for the action and bottom metal, and follow it up by cutting and shaping the rest of it to your specs. I have been dabling at this for a little while now. What got me into it was wanting to build a gew custom mausers and upgrade some wood on some old model 12's and sXs shotguns. You can pm me for more info, I have learned a lot the hard way but it is very enjoyable. ITs amazing how nice of a stock you can make on a $40-$75 blank. They compete with all but the highest grade guns out there.

I have done a few and if I want to stay in business I should never do another one again...haha

Here are some pictures of a two piece Stevens Shotgun Stock I made from scratch. This was the first one I ever did, so please dont hammer me too hard.
